This was my second stay at Auberge Hidanomori — I am not sure how I am able to review this accommodation twice, however, Auberge Hidanomori is deserving of it! Highlights: - Beautiful, charming pension tucked away in the hills of Takayama surrounding the city. - The pension has under 10 guest rooms — if you want peace and quiet definitely consider staying here. - Welcoming, friendly and accommodating hosts. - The best free breakfast you will ever have. - One of the best full-course Italian dinners you will ever have — do not miss it if you stay here. Please be advised dinner is not included with the accommodation. - Complimentary transportation services to and from the station. Thank you again for the wonderful stay, Auberge Hidanomori!

Beautiful Gifu”
Three of us, one a Japanese speaker, spent four very enjoyable days at Auberge Hidanomori and each of us would have no hesitation in recommending it as a wonderful place from which to relax and explore the area. Although the Auberge is situated a few kilometres outside Takayama and we had our own transport, there is provided complimentary transport into town from where there are bus connections to the local places of interest and train links to further afield. The Auberge is family run and has been for several decades. It is warm and homely without being claustrophobic - there is a good-size lounge area which is pleasant to sit in after dinner and drink the herbal tea provided; with its wood burning fire, it would I am sure would be very warm and welcoming when the days get colder - we were there in mid-September. The setting at the edge of a wood and the decor give it a slightly rustic feel. The place is spotlessly clean; our sheets were changed each day, and in the bedroom and around the building there were little touches that evidenced a desire to make the visitor feel welcome. None of the rooms is ensuite but to our surprise, that was not a problem. There were loos and washbasins in close proximity. The onsen and shower facilities were on the floor below and these could be used privately if required. There were no queues but if there were a full complement of guests some patience might be needed. The meals we enjoyed during our stay were a highlight of our stay. The cuisine was mainly European : each morning we had a different breakfast made with fresh produce and home baked breads. Eggs, ham, cheese and salad featured, always garnished or seasoned beautifully to give the meal an exquisite taste. We had two evening meals and choose a starter and pasta course: again, we relished the dishes provided for the blend of tastes and perfect flavouring, and found the two courses more than adequate , although I am not sure we left a morsel on our plates. A Gem in Takayama”
We ended our 2 week trip of Japan in Takayama staying at Auberge Hidanomori. It truly is a hidden gem tucked in a quiet location, within walking distance of town but the pension staff is available to take you to town and pick you up at the train station. The dinner is not to be missed as they have a true chef who prepares Mediterranean cuisine that we enjoyed two evenings as well as a delicious breakfast each morning. The pension is spotless. We typically would not partake in a community bath area but this was a relaxing experience we looked forward to in the evening or morning.

Beautiful and charming inn managed by a welcoming, friendly and accommodating staff. ”
We stood here for 2 nights during our visit to Takayama. While the inn itself was about a 10 minute drive from the downtown area of Takayama, we had no issues getting to and from our points of interest thanks to the management's complimentary transportation services. Furthermore - we had visited Takayama to attend the annual Spring event that is held in the old town called Takayama Matsuri. One of our Shinkansen trains got canceled due to bad weather, so we were forced to take the next bus to Takayama. Because of this, we unfortunately missed the first day of the festivities and arrived at Takayama later than expected. So we could still enjoy exploring and having dinner in the town, one of the staff members drove to the station to pick up our luggage only and bring it to our room. Later than night, they came by the station to pick us up again and bring us back to the hotel. We were pleasantly surprised by how accommodating the staff was!

Truly unforgettable”
We travelled by bus from Osaka which took about 5 hours to Takayama. Upon reaching, we called Toshie only to know that we were supposed to check in the next day. Toshie was kind enough to still greet us at the station. He offered to look for a nearby AND value for money hotel to stay a night and even sent us to the hotel!!! Auberege Hidanomori is so beautiful, cosy and warm. We stayed there for 2 nights and it was so magical! It was spring but when we woke up, there was snow everywhere. Such a treat. Breakfast was delicious and cooked by Toshie himself. We truly enjoyed being there especially with the serenity, cleanliness and the kind hospitality. We have recommended this place to others and if you are reading this, do not hesitate! It's one of the best places we've stayed and and would love to be back soon.

Home away from home”
Auberge Hidanomori is an incredibly peaceful and beautiful B&B. The owners are welcoming and accommodating. They care about their guests' experience and it shows. We had regular contact with them before and throughout our stay. They came to pick us up on arrival and dropped us at the station at our chosen time before our train to Kyoto. We also loved the food. Do yourself a favour and have dinner at there if you can. You won't regret it. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, the bathroom never felt like it was shared, and the whole house is decorated in a subdued and stylish manner. Our stay at the auberge has been one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. We could not recommend it more.

Best place to stay in Takayama! I wish we stayed longer!”
Auberge Hidanomori is one of the best places I've stayed in! There is just a certain feel to it that makes you feel like home. They are very accommodating with your schedule and would drive you to Hida Folk Village and pick you up and drop you off if needed to go to the town centre. The perfect time to go there is during winter when the surrounding area is covered with snow! I had the most relaxing bath in my life there. I will definitely stay there again :-)

A mesmerising stay in the forest”
Just randomly found this unique, incredibly interesting pension on Agoda, and couldn't be more grateful - it was one of the most exhilarating, memorable stays of mine so far. Literally located in the forest in Takayama (hence the name Hidanomori, "Hida's Forest"), the family-run pension breathes of rawness. Waking up to a stunning view, surrounded by nothing but greens and more greens, the deafening silence of nature, the sweetest air. There could not be a dreamier place than this. The husband chef is a brilliant chef. Infusing the freshest local ingredients with (I think) a good amount of Italian flavours, my 5-course dinner was unforgettable. The wife also makes delicious breakfast for guests. The 2-night amazing stay left me in awe. Will surely return in Winter times, when the place will glitter in snow.

What A Gem Of A Place! ”
We had an amazing stay at Auberge Hidonomori! Located in tranquil surrounds with a bustling fire and snow beginning to fall, you could not have asked for anything more. The facilities are exceptionally clean, the guest rooms spacious and beautifully presented and the overall feel was wonderful. The family who run Auberge Hidonomori are fantastic hosts, - polite and courteous and will more than happily assist you in any way possible. To top off our stay - you cannot go past the AMAZING ITALIAN JAPANESE INSPIRED DEGUSTATION - WOW! That was indeed a meal that we will always remember and the breakfasts were wonderful as well. Thank you for a fantastic stay Auberge Hidonomori - I hope to return one day but if not - see you in Potts Point for another dining experience!

Great service and excellent food”
If you can get pass the idea of having Italian food in Takayama, then this is the right place for a real Italian dinner treat. The chef will be spearheading a new Italian restaurant next April in Tokyo Omotesando Hills and he had been the head chef at an Italian restaurant in Sydney for quite many years before coming home to Takayama 2 years ago.

Beautiful lodging, comfortable homestay feel and delicious meals”
The lodge is like a homestay that has beautiful interior with fireplaces at the common living room and kitchen and large comfortable bedroom to keep you warm during winter. The surrounding is tranquil. The snow during winter makes the surrounding even more beautiful. The owners are very friendly and the home-cooked breakfast is delicious. The location is about 10mins drive away from Takayama station and they have pick up service that is available at your convenience. Awesome place and highly recommended!

Excellent hospitality and attention to detail!”
The 2 nights in Auberge Hida No Mori was exceptional and fantasy like!!! The house is beautiful, spotless clean and the 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner I had in Auberge Hida No Mori was one of the best breakfasts and Italian meals I ever had! The hosts also provides free shuttles to and from the city (which is about 10 minutes drives) at anytime you like and prefer! Dinner reservations is required and would highly recommend everyone to have the dinner in the Auberge. I absolutely love everything about the place and hope to be back soon! A gem of a place”
Although 4km out of Takayama, this hotel was a gem of a find. This family run enterprise could not be more welcoming and the staff more helpful, always happy to drive you in or pick you up from town. The food was wonderful. Each morning would bring a different, and delicious, breakfast (there is no menu, but trust the Chef). The evening meal was also wonderful. I would highly recommended it.

Great stay, lovely hosts, with free taxi service!”
The Auberge is a little off the beaten track, which makes it more appealing. When we were told there was a free shuttle, I expected it to be at set times. No! It's more like your own personal taxi! Our wonderful hosts booked a local restaurant for us one night, their driver took us there, and asked the restaurant owner to call when we were finished. Sure enough, when our delicious meal was over, our driver arrived outside. Now that's service! All the other good reviews are accurate, especially about the wonderful breakfasts and fabulous Italian dinner. Just one small negative...the beds are very hard!! Still, would go back in a flash!

Great location (for me at least), beautiful Inn located in a leafy suburb or Takayama. ”
A very well designed, cosy auberge. Simple interior design with the esthetics and functionality of a Finnish or Nordic design - Hygge! :) Very friendly and professional staff. Meals prepared by a very skilled chef were to die for! The taste, the presentation and the way they were served, alltogether I would say near Michelin Star level. Hotel has two private baths, outside terrace to sit and relax. We had a lovely time there, thank you all working there for making us happy.

Everything about our stay at this hotel was wonderful. Highly recommended”
The fact the hotel is a drive away from Takayama centre is no issue since the staff offer to drive you and pick you up from the centre easily. Breakfast was wonderful and room was a good size.

A perfect stay”
We spent one night in this Auberge for our honey moon and what a beautiful surprise. The place is so pretty, the rooms are clean and peaceful, the private bath is perfect and the owners are lovely, especially Toshiyuki Nakayasu (if I'm not wrong with the name) who have been so nice with us, he did everything for us to have the perfect stay and he succeed :) He also gave us a wonderfull green tea shop adress where we went later and had a fantastic experience trying a lot of excellent Sencha, Kukicha and Matcha tea ! Thank you, we'll definitely come again !

Excellent excellent excellent”
The place is great, very clean, large room, shared bathroom is not a problem at all. The house was lovely and stylish, very cosy and the hosts were very welcoming and they made us feel like home. Meals served were way more than expected we reserved dinner in advance and proper 5-course Italian meal served for dinner .. 5 star tasty, and delicious toast for breakfast (I am not into the beautiful typical ryokan meal at all so this is like heaven for me). We enjoyed the fireplace in the living room a great spot for family gathering. We ordered a sparkling and a rose ... the evening spent at Auberge Hida no mori was really a memorable night for our family indeed. Japanese hospitality with western food ... superb !!! Highly recommend and will sure stay here again.
