"I had an amazing experience at Kigusuriya. Having stayed at numerous Japanese and Western-style hotels throughout Japan over the years, Kigusuriya stands out as a special, unique experience. The family that owns this historic building cares for their customers to a degree far beyond the necessary expectations of hospitality. I learned much from them of local culture, customs, food, and to a broader extent the history of Kyoto and even Japan. The matron of the family is gracious, kind and knowledgeable, and I would highly recommend engaging in conversation with her when the opportunity arises. Kigusuriya is a place of comforts large and small, and will be sure to erase any built-up anxiety and instill a sense of calm contentment. I also can't forget to mention the food, which is astonishingly good. The presentation, variety and flavor won't lose to any of the best of nearby Kyoto city --- and you get to try local delicacies as well (including mountain boar and deer!). If you have yet to experience the countryside and mountains of Japan, and would further enjoy the healing effects of the best "omotenashi" family-style service you'll find anywhere, then give both the mountain village of Miyama and its hidden gem, Kigusuriya, a try. You will treasure your time spent in this quiet paradise."

"My stay at Miyama was met with some of the best customer service. Miyama is quite isolated (roughly 3 hrs from kyoto) but some of the workers gave us a tour around Miyama for no extra charge. The food was just incredible and left me satisfied every night. The onsen was immaculately clean and well tended to. Best place to stay to get away from the very busy kyoto during hinami, and Miyama itself is one of the most beautiful places I've see. Dramatic mountains filled with beautiful japanese cedar trees and the streets lined with hundreds of Sakura trees made this place one of the most beautiful places I've been to during spring. Highly recommended. "
