"My partner and I stayed at this hotel for four nights in July during our 2.5 wk stay in Sri Lanka. The room we had booked was one of the ocean privilege suites and wow what a room it was, one of the best we have ever stayed in anywhere in the world!! It was very big and had a full wall of glass overlooking the fabulous private beach and across to Galle. The bathroom was amazing complete with Jacuzzi. We were given a pillow menu and soap menu on arrival which were nice touches. The sun loungers on the beach were really fabulous and gave that extra touch. The breakfasts were very good, not buffet, but served to order with plenty of options. We had lunch and dinner on a number of occasions during our stay and again the food was fabulous. We had a BBQ on the beach one night and this was a real treat. The staff at the hotel were amazing and couldn't do enough for you! The hotel is just a five/ten minute tuk tuk ride from Unawatuna beach and jungle beach which are beautiful. Galle town is only a ten minute trip and the fort walls are an amazing sight in the evening as the sun sets. There are plenty of excellent restaurants scattered around the old town. On the downside, the pool is very small & uninviting. It was monsoon when we were there and when an occasional shower came, the noisy metal roller doors surrounding the front of the restaurant had to be closed, making the place look like an industrial building. Overall we had an amazing stay at this hotel and would recommend it as one of the best boutique hotels not only in Sri Lanka, but anywhere! "

"Cantaloupe Levels provides you with more than what you'd expect. First and foremost, the view is phenomenal. Located on top of a hill, the hotel is first of its kind in Sri Lanka, basking a 3-floor structure with 9 luxury rooms. The hotel overlooks the Unawatuna Bay, providing you spectacular insight to the stunning beach landscape of the South. The view; both invites you to go down to the beach and bathe in its warm waters yet eludes you, so you'd rather watch its beauty from a distance. Another unique factor at Levels is it's tranquility; even though its location is prime property, it is the only hotel there and it is surrounded by beautiful lush greenery for miles. Thus enhancing your experience with a mix of adventure and serenity. The suites are grand and extend luxurious comfort; soft feather pillows, ultra-soothing mattress, Egyptian cotton linen, fresh simplistic bathroom with jacuzzi jets and rain-shower, his and her sinks. And the list of amenities are endless. The staff are friendly, pleasant and most importantly, obliging. The private concierge went out of his way to make sure we were well taken care of (kudos Nuwan). Love the tri-colour pool. The breakfast menu is delectable with Continental, American and Sri Lankan options to select from, unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to have lunch or dinner there. All in all, great experience, beautiful hotel. Hats off Cantaloupe&Co on its creativity and class!! "

"We stayed one night at Hotel J. The hotel is brand new and I believe that this was a soft opening. The Rooms had everything you needed and the beds were super comfortable. The Rooms however, were not cleaned out perfectly. There was dust on the bathroom floor and the counters and residue from the construction. I believe, this was due to the fact that it was a soft opening, but if the rooms were given out, it should have been cleaned thoroughly. The staff, were very helpful, and the Wi-Fi was great. The food offered was priced well, and the quality of food was OK. The hotel is not a beach front property, but it is located close to the action points. A 10 minute walk (1km ) will take you to Welle Dewala Road where all the action points are. Overall, Hotel J is true value for money in Unawatuna. "

"2 Canadians from Vancouver wish to thank all at WB Villa for a really First Class experience. 5 stars from us. Our one week in the Basilico Bungalow was the highlight of a month long stay in Sri Lanka and we could've/should've stayed longer. We came half-way across the world and WB didn't disappoint. Where do we start? - the location in Thalpe, the comfortable bungalow, the beautiful architecture and funky furniture, the warm friendly and professional staff, the delicious food and the gorgeous gardens and beach on which to laze around. The staff here are fantastic: friendly but professional, discrete when needed. They all take turns looking after the guests, sweeping and watering the gardens, cooking, serving, cleaning and all the many many duties that elevates this Villa to 5 Star status.Thank you Sanjivan, Randika, Chandana, Kumara and all the other boys for treating us so well. Food: The meals were always delicious - breakfasts lunches and dinners and we could write long stories but WB has a 5 star reputation for food and drinks and we agree. We couldn't resist Grilled Fish and Prawns everyday, heavenly!! And the breakfast omelettes, WOW!! Location: This part of the Thalpe coast is villa country, we walked 30 mts east and you get to Habaraduwa junction. Walking west you'll get to Vijaya beach in about the same time, passing by all the other famous villas - Frangipani etc - that will cost you double the price than staying at WB Villa. Swimming: There is a safe area to swim just east of the villa, walk 5 mts out the back gate and the spot is between the reefs. Right in front is the lagoon thats protected from the waves but you may cut yourself on the reef so wear shoes or flippers in this spot. Thank you very much Massimo and Lasith, Sanjivan and the staff, and to Mama and the doggies for a fabulous time at WB Villa. L+J, Vancouver, Canada"

"Our stay at the Fortress was incredible. The setting is stunning with the hotel pool overlooking the beach and Indian Ocean, with turtles close to the shore line and stilt fisherman catching fish as the sun started to set, sights we will remember for a long time. Our room was patio-facing and gigantic, superbly equipped and very comfortable and luxurious. Upon arrival we were given a full guided tour by the staff who showed us how to work all the equipment and sound system which was very helpful. The breakfast was really impressive a huge variety of western and Sri Lankan delights to choose from with excellent egg/regular/ string hoppers to order. We didn't need to worry about lunch! The hotel is only 30 minutes drive or tuk tuk from Galle and 15-20 minutes from Unawatuna further down the coast, so very accessible for dinner or sightseeing. We even took the bus one day which was quite an adventure and definitely shaved at least 10 minutes off the journey time! The staff were excellent, remembered our names, were attentive and professional and went to every effort to ensure our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. "

"I enjoyed my stay at Thambapanni, it was at the end of my trip in Sri Lanka and I found the change of pace at Unawatuna very welcoming. It sort of felt like a haven away from the madding crowd! If you are wanting to stay at Unawatuna, Thambapanni Retreat is a great option, its not budget accommodation nor is it luxury, its a little bit rustic, but hey this is Sri Lanka don't have high expectations. The breakfast was filling, and included in my room rate, the menu westernised but if you want to eat Sri Lankan and its not on the menu just ask them to prepare something for you. The staff are happy, smiling and overjoyed to assist you. The wifi works ok, but when the weather is stormy there is no signal, but no matter, you're on holiday it will be back on later. The proximity of Unawatuna Beach to Galle is close, 20 minutes and 300 to 350 LKR in a tuk tuk will get you there. Consider mixing it up with a bit of beach and town for a change of pace. "

"We really enjoyed and recommend the Dunes Unawatuna hotel. The Sri Lankan owner spent a number of years living in Australia and has made sure this newly built hotel has good Western standards - quite a difference to other places we've stayed in Sri Lanka. The staff were friendly and attentive, we enjoyed the food, and the beach is great for swimming, running, and a range of good restaurants with tables on the beach."

"my girlfriend and i stayed at thaproban beach house on new years eve 2012. pricey by sri lanka standards we got a decent room with an average view but great bathroom. the door on the room needed fixing and i think i could open it with a ice cream stick. the ac worked well but the wifi was down when we stayed. the price included a gala dinner - unfortunately we couldn't stay there without taking the new year feast option, which was great so we didn't mind. location wise you can't get better - it's at the quiet end of unawatuna beach. by that i mean you have maybe 15-20m to walk along the beach before you hit your first restaurant/bar...perfect. where thaproban beach house really excels is service. nuvvani on the front desk was fantastic and went out of her way to help us out. i had a problem with the powerpoints and she had someone at my room in under a minute. i also had to do some unscheduled travel and she arranged the hotel car to take me immediately. by the way, their driver is excellent and i'd definitely recommend using him to go between unawatuna and colombo if training isn't an option for you.
