My 1st Time Ever Staying in a Hostel - The Review”

Cleanliness, Internet Speed & Reliability, Accommodating Staff

Being that this was my first time staying in guesthouse with shared accommodations, I was initially worried about the usual things that most worry about when sharing a room and amenities with strangers; two of the biggest things being cleanliness and ability to get along with those assigned to the room. All of my worries were quickly put to rest. The facilities at 168 Chiang Mai Guesthouse were extremely clean. The washroom and common areas were continuously looked after. The layout of their laundry facility was also well thought out. Located on their rooftop, plenty of line was provided for guests to dry their clothes on. The guesthouse also had a policy of no shoes or sandals past the entrance which made for clean floors. The couple who owns this guesthouse were always happy to help, even during the awkward late hours. I had gotten myself into a couple of situations where I needed assistance in the middle of the night, so I gave them a call and surprisingly not only did they pick up the phone, they also helped with a very positive attitude. For this I was most grateful. Located in the northwest boundary of the Old City, I found the location convenient as there are many transportation options and a couple of 24 hour variety stores only footsteps away. Their internet connection was the fastest and most reliable compared to all of the other places I have stayed in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. I've stayed in about 10 different places during this trip including 6 hotels were are rated between 3-4 stars. If there are any downsides to this place, I would say the lack of a common area for guest to hangout in. This makes it a little to meet new people (if this is a goal) or just to even lounge in if you don't really want to go out and explore. The sterile ambiance may also be a negative to some. If you are looking for a place that has character when it comes to interior design, this place ain't it. But this approach is what makes their facilities extremely clean.

This hostel was my saving grace...”

After having an absolutely horrible experience at another hostel in Chiang Mai, I was so happy to find 168 Chiang Mai Guesthouse. The staff take great care in making sure the facilities are clean. I was so happy to see that people leave their shoes and sandles on a shoe rack before proceeding to the the stairs toward the dorm rooms. It’s definitely not a “party hostel”, but an ideal place for the mature solo traveller. In the hostel world, you often get what you pay for, and this place is worth it. I would come back!

    Great hostel! ”

Value for money, clean, and friendly staff!

We only stayed one night because we weren't pleased with our first hostel but we wished we'd stayed in 168 guesthouse for our entire stay in Chiang Mai. The staff were superfriendly and nice. The interior was simple but still clean and nice. Everything felt fresh, the beds were hard but still ok and considering that other beds in Asia are rock hard, these were quite comfortable. I would definitely recommend this hostel, you get so much out of your money. If you're looking for a fresh, clean and quiet hostel/guesthouse this is the place for you!

    Great hostel”

    Staff, very clean, wifi

This hostel was cleaned from top to bottom every single day. The sheets were replaced and cleaned every day. The showers, bathrooms, and floors were cleaned every day. I can't tell you how awesome that is. Cleanest place I've stayed. Wifi worked fine. The owners were amazing. I stayed there for a week relaxing and taking it easy after a motorbike injury to my leg. Btw, the private hospital in Chiang Mai is great. The showers at this hostel were perfect. Hot tankless water heaters. Multiple showers and toilets for each dorm. Towels and lockers were provided. I didn't book a tour because of my leg, but there were many tour options. The hostel was quiet. I slept fine. The air con worked great. This is not a party hostel. This is a very good hostel for a very reasonable price. Adam, one of the owners, is always around and willing to help if he can. Really, I wish I had more time to hang out with that guy. Super helpful. He even let me stay in the tent on the roof one night! Laundry is a self service coin operated washer and dryer. The location is right at the north end of the 'old town'. It's just enough out of the way to be quiet, but not so much that you feel isolated. It's also right next to the night food market. I liked the location. Great value for the money. I hope to visit there again soon!

    Good Stay in CM”

It is located in the northern moat of CM, I walked all the way from CM train station which is around 4KM. It would be ideal if the guesthouse is located inside the moat or somewhere near Tha Phea Gate! Everything else about this guesthouse is awesome. The price is a steal, the bathroom is clean, the lady boss is friend and wifi is top notch. To note, for fellow backpackers the dorm is on the highest floor =) Would definitely recommend and stay here again when I am back in CM.

    Staff, cleanliness, price

Loved this place! The owner is super nice, very friendly and helpful. They keep the hostel immaculately clean. The location is just outside the old city on the other side of the moat -the area is nothing special but it's a short walk to everything. Only drawback is there isn't a big lounge area, but there is a rooftop patio. I extended my stay here because I liked it so much. Definitely recommend staying here!

    Nice hostel, lovely hosts :)”

Nice little hostel just outside the old town walls, Tesco / 7/11 / night food market only a couple mins walk away. A/C room is nice and cold, beds are the usual very firm thai style mattresses but solid bunks with privacy curtains. Toilets and showers are regularly cleaned, showers run hot and with decent pressure. Free coffee and water available all day, beers are actually cheaper than 7eleven! Hosts are lovely, Adam is always chatting with guests, very eager to help. Also a great cook so if he offers something he's making then jump at the chance, had some delicious shawarma wraps cooked completely from scratch!

    clean,location, price

GOOD - wifi connection is great, location wise located near 7-11, tesco, masjid, songtaew stands and a small night market. Room and toilet is clean. Staff can speak English and Chinese very well. BAD- They seems to forgot that I had to do early checkout although I had informed them earlier. Nobody was at the counter so I had to keep the keys as souvenir.

    So so ”

It's kinda clean in general, the bed is quite hard. The toilet and shower room is acceptable clean. The price is a bit expensive to what they offer. They don't provide breakfast but they have a small restaurant and a coffee stall in front which have tasty but not so pricey food and drink.

The owners were always there and ready to help with anything - questions about places in Thailand, transportation, any problems (even random qns about life haha), and any thing about the hostel. Felt very safe and comfortable, met lots of friends here too! Thank you!
