Well worth the hassle to get there ”
We got exactly what we wanted with Ao Pong — a quiet couple days on a gorgeous beach. Ao Pong is fairly removed from the rest of the island — it's about 100 meters down a dirt road from the Ao Nid pier, which is mostly used for freight rather than travelers. Which means that if you're looking to get drunk with ex-pats and whoop it up, you'll be incredibly disappointed. Instead, we barely saw the people from the other bungalows except for a few moments on the beaches or at the restaurant for the "resort." We got beautiful views with the relaxation that comes from being apart from people. The couple that run the place are helpful and — as their sign says — incredibly chill. Next time we go, we'll know to contact them first to arrange transit down — we got screwed by the vagaries of the Thai bus service on the way there — because they did such a great job arranging transit back. The meals — at least the vegetarian ones — are delicious and included some of the best green curry we've ever had. Better be the kind of vegetarian that doesn't need to ask too many questions about fish sauce in your noodles though, since we're pretty sure it was in there, and the language barrier was enough to not muck around with trying to get food without. But pretty much all of Thailand takes a willful ignorance for vegetarians about fish sauce anyway. The Western food was so-so, but the Thai stuff was a blast. The snorkeling was fantastic — the reefs are best seen in the mid-morning, when the light is good and the tide is in. They're about 30 to 40 meters out at high tide, and are fairly diverse, with big schools of fish to gawk at. We wished that we had time to go on the speed boat trip that one of the owners runs — he's passionate about underwater filming and has the best spots around the island mapped out. But we didn't have the time, since we were so busy studiously relaxing. If you're looking for a party, Ko Chang is your island. Otherwise, come here now.

Great place for relax”
The time spent ion Ao Pong Resort was the best time during my trip to Asia this year. We spent there almost 5 days for relax time and this was great choice. The place is located very near the pier with boat connection with Trad. We travelled with boonsiri and it was ok. The pick up from pier was on time and we were transferred to Ao Pong. The bungalows were good and clean. (although if you have some more money to spend I suggest the ones with Aircon - they are better). The resort has the beach but for swimming its not perfect (a lot of sharp rocks) so the swimming shoes are suggested. The food was absolutely great and not very expensive. Also you can buy boat - snorkelling trip or rent a bike or a motorbike. Overall the stay was great and I can fully recomend the place. Would like to come back

Supreme relaxation on a private, non-sandy beach”
Please note, this is not a sandy beach. There is sand, and good swimming, but you'll need shoes to walk over the coral and stones along the shoreline. The big plus is it is a private beach, and there are endless beasties to look at - crabs, fish, shrimps, shellfish, sea urchins and so on, plus good snorkelling straight from the beach, if you like that sort of thing. I do, and so I loved it there, and it would be great for kids I reckon. The location is something to be prepared for too. It is not near the other resorts. There is a small shop selling basic food supplies about 10 minutes walk away, and Rien, the owner, has a nice restaurant with a good range of Thai and Western food. There are also three other restaurants within easy walking distance. The island's main pier is close by too, for boat access. But that's it. If you want to see the rest of the island you'll need to hire a scooter, which you can do at Ao Pong, or charter one of the island's few taxis. The bungalows are right on the beach, clean, airy, everything works, and Rien is friendly and helpful and goes to a lot of trouble to keep the place looking nice. There are hammocks and deck chairs, some bungalows have air con. Facilities are good value for the price, but dont expect luxury and do expect geckos, ants etc, it is a tropical island after all. I found the place very relaxing and peaceful; really somewhere to get away from it all. But if you want sandy beach and souvenir shops etc, best head for Koh Mak resort or one of the others. Take an umbrella for sun/rain, and a torch.

Quiet beach and nice snorkelling”
I enjoyed my stay at Ao Pong, but you really need to be able to ride a motorbike (you can hire one from Ao Pong) to be able to get around the island. Ao Pong is a 20 minute long hot walk in full sun up to the nearest set of shops? The beach is very rocky and is no good for swimming at low tide, good for snorkelling at high tide though, it might help if you bring some rubber shoes to wear on your feet in the water. The bungalow was quiet simple but clean and comfortable enough, with a nice balcony overlooking the palm trees that line the beach and provide good shade for sitting in a hammock and reading your book! Ao Pong is a good option for Koh Mak, price is great, but you'll be pretty isolated if you can't take one of the motorbikes to get around the small island. Food at Ao Pong is good, and the staff are wonderful. I also recommend Bamboo Hideaway for a great Italian feed (give them a call and they will send a taxi to pick you up)

Lovely place to relax”
Great place to spend a few days, especially if you like to snorkel - the reef was pretty good with plenty of variety, but you will need reef shoes, available at resort. Lovely spacious bungalow, good cheap food, walk to/from Ao Nid pier & Koh Mak Seafood restaurant, mopeds available to hire - great place.

Lovely location for peace and quiet”
don't expect the ritz for the money you are paying, but the views and location are 5*. a few rooms on a lovely beach, peace and quiet, great value for money. the beach is a bit rocky, with broken coral and shells, bu very clean. rien and her staff are out cleaning rubbish and leaves from very early in the morning. there is a reef to snorkel in the shallow bay, and plenty of natural shade. rien cooks good value food in the restaurant, nothing is too much trouble. the comfort fan room was clean and a good size, the balcony has great views. the bed was very hard, but other than that i was very comfortable in a fan room with cold water as the temperature is not too high in dec/jan. i did appreciate the fact that they didn't have ridiculous peak season prices like many other places in thailand. if you wantto explore the island, you can rent a motorbike or get transport point to point on the island for 50 thb each person. it is quite isolated with not much within walking distance (except a great bakery) but we loved the peace and quiet. it is very close to ao nid pier, but there is not much boat traffic from it. i would definitely go back.

A perfect place if you have a motorbike”
A nice place to stay at if your goal is not to be there all the day sunbathing and swimming. Snorkelling can be nice near the hotel if the sea is quiet but swimming can be a problem beacause of stones and corals. But we had a motorbike (you can rent it from the hotel owner for about 250 baht per day) and it was no problem for us. The place is quiet and crowdless. If your goal is chilling out lying in a hammock - the hotel is for you. The resort is in a 5 minutes' walk from the main Ao Nid Pier and it is both an advantage (you don't need a taxi) and a disadvantage (sometimes there is litter in the sea). Bungalows are basic but clean and have a nice view.

Just lovely.”
It's truly the best place I've ever been. The beach is just 3 meters from the bungalows which are basic but clean. The small restaurant is on the water, lovely food and service. If you like quiet surroundings, no tourists, no noise, only the crystal clear water, sun and lush garden then you'll love Ao Pong Resort. Cheapness is just a bonus.

The best personnel”
The personnel her is the treasure. We felt here like home beacuse the people run this resort. Resort doesn´t have so sandy beach but it has beautiful coral reef so if you like snorkel you will love it here. It is really peaceful place with nice people that can speek english which is actually rare in Thailand. We miss them already... We had cheap bungalows and it was ok but i recommend you the new bugalows they looked really great. At the night there is houndreds harmless and funny hermid crabs on the beach. :) We were also on Koh Kood and Koh Chang so we can compare and Koh Mak is the best island with the beautiful small islands close like Koh Kham with the best beach we ever saw. Island is clean with no garbage Almost without tourist, polite locals...

Nice House-Reef and no sandlfies”
We liked to snorkel in the morning after breakfast. And the staff is really nice. You can rent a motorbike for 250Baht per day directly at Ao Pong. We were in a fan room in March and we did not miss an aircon, the climate was nice at the nights. The room was clean and simple. Info: Sandflies are a big, annoying issue on Koh Mak. We were bitten a lot by those monsters on the other, long main beaches, but NOT at the beach in front of Ao Pong. So remember to protect yourself when you visit other beaches. We were warned after we were already bitten...the bites are really crazy ichy

Lovely little place”
Right on the water, not a sandy swimming beach it beautiful and very relaxing with hammocks and chairs. The place is very well kept and clean by Ao Pong. We stayed in the standard bungalow which was nice enough but would definitely recommend the deluxe bungalows, they looked beautiful. We rented a motorbike for 250 a day and explored the island, you should do the same as there are some lovely beaches and restaurants. Also good food at the property if you don’t want to venture out.

Nice chill vibe”
I was pleased to find Ao Pong Resort quiet and friendly. The staff was nice and helpful. The beach is not quite classic white sand - some rocks and coral, but very pleasant. There is a pier nearby, but traffic is light and it did not diminish the cool atmosphere

Super cute little bungalows ”
We had the most chilled and relaxed stay on Koh Mak :) the bungalows are basic (if you don't book the deluxe one) but for the price they're really good. The couple running the place are just too sweet. Right in front of the bungalows is a nice quite beach with hammocks and chairs and you can also go snorkeling there. We really enjoyed staying there :)

Nice and cosy”
My wife and I and our three adult children were there with us for seven days and six nights. Even though Ao Pong is not a luxurious hotel, we really enjoy our stay there. Friendly owners with great sea view guest rooms, considering it's a two star hotel, what more can you ask? The only regret we had was the volume of shower water. I saw the owner working with his sub contractors before we take off.

Excellent”
Really lovely bungalows with sea view. The owners were very helpful in planning with us our way to different island and any questions we had. The beach is fairly rocky but once you’re in the water it’s fine. Not loads around but that’s the beauty of Koh Mak. Perfect for a very chilled out peaceful time.

Great place to relax & unwind!”
We had an amazing few days at the resort! Perfect place to relax if you are looking for some peace & quiet. The beach is gorgeous, although not really swimmable as it is so rocky. The bungalows are great for the price, however, the non-updated bungalows could use some major updating. I think the bathrooms would be a lot better if they just took the roof off & made it into an outdoor bathroom... I think this would help a lot with ventilation and making it seem a bit more clean & fitting. :) The staff was amazing and the owner's wife in an amazing cook!!! I would definitely recommend this resort!

Perfect quiet bungalows and super nice owner”
Everything except the location and the beach for swimming was just awesome. For the location it's no problem since we rented good cheap scooters from the resort and you can go everywhere in no time. Exactly the same for the beach, since there are a lot of sharp rocks right in front. If you are carefull it's still a nice swim. Bungalows are may the best on the island considering the cheap price. Super close to the pier and as already mentioned the nicest helpful owner you can expect. Sure coming back.

Relaxed place with nice snorkelling”
The bungalows are simple, but provide you with all you need. They are just few meters from the seashore. The beach is nice, clean and you have reefs for snorkelling just a minute of swimming from the beach. The staff is very friendly, communicative and they really make sure you feel comfortable. The resort is pretty quiet and relaxed, it is the only resort in the bay with jungle tress around.

Best Chill Place!”
If you want to relax, chill-out and just forget about the work and other stuff... go there. The beach is quiet, no one is going through. Good equipment - hammocks, sunbeds, chairs, and tables. Enough for everyone. I've never ever had to "fight" for a free place. The beach is cleaned and raked during a whole day so it is clean and soft (no stones and shells). The "restaurant" is great. Prices are low so it is hard to find a better place for eat however I recommend to visit some other places - just to compare! What can be improved? Not much. We could expect little more equipment in our house (de luxe): missing for wardrobe, chairs with table on the terrace. But we didn't spend too much time inside... On the beach - for those who like to swim it could be a little hard during low-tide. The bottom is very stony and a lot of shells laid down... good reef shoes will help. During high-tide, there is no problem. This is a price for nice reef available from the beach!
