Tell taxi to drive behind the Gold City Hotel”

The name on my Agoda reservation is “Golden House Residence” but no taxi knows where that is. All Taxis only know the “Golden City Hotel.” so Agoda should address that problem, and at least provide a phone number for the Residence. As other reviews have pointed out, this is a very basic accommodation: clean, stark, mostly functional, and cheap—which is what I was looking for. There was loud karaoke until 11 PM, but it was very quiet after that. When I asked how much it would be to stay a second night, I was given a rate 25% cheaper than the internet rate the previous night, so I took it. I did not spend a lot of time in the room, and it was OK. The major negative is crossing the street/highway (Sukhumvit)-- to get to the two convenience stores and night restaurants. Although there is a zebra striped pedestrian crossing, Thai drivers completely ignore this and will not stop or even slow down for you to get across the street. They have a reputation for "hit and run." Thus, be very careful. My second ranked negative was the electricity in my building went off about 9 AM the morning I was to check out. Now minor negatives: (a) my “non-smoking” room had an ashtray in it (but no obvious smoke smell); (b) no double bed was available (but they pushed my two single beds together), and (c) the sincere and friendly staff have only limited English (which was OK for me, as it was an opportunity to speak Thai). But considering the low price I was given, I would go back (if I ever wanted to stay in this area again).

Mis-represented by Agoda”

The review from Rosalind below from 30 December is accurate with respect to the mis-representation by Agoda. I as well was moved to Golden City Rayong Hotel (which is next door), however my room was not so nice. Do not book Golden House on Agoda or you will be moved. I was given a room in the back (not in the main building). The room was large, but it was very outdated. The bed was too soft for my liking but the bathroom was clean. Overall I paid too much for what I got. I am happy I was only there for one day. I would think the rooms in the main building are nicer, however I do not know. The hotel is a very short walk to the main shopping mall. If you are in Rayong for the beach then do not stay here. You will need to get a taxi or rent a motorbike. The reception staff in my part of the hotel was friendly and spoke decent english. I would not stay here again.

The hotel is convenient and comfortable, with large rooms and an updated bath. The room overall has parts that are updated (bath) and parts that look dated (furniture and decor is decidedly 1960's period), but the room is well cared for. The beds are comfortable, and there is a small fridge, which is nice. Would have like to have had a hot water pot, to make some coffee in the morning, though. But the buffet for breakfast is enormous, with selections for both western and Thai tastes. If you book for less than a month you will be re-routed from the Golden House Serviced Apartment to the Golden City hotel.

Good location, large room, huge breakfast buffet”

We booked a room at the "Golden House Service Apartment" for one night, but found ourselves re-routed to Golden City Hotel. Not the same room as pictured in Agoda, as the Service Apartment is only for guests who stay for one month or more. This is not made clear in the Agoda listing, and booking through the Golden City listing gives the same room, but at a much higher price. Anyway, the room we had was large, quiet and comfortable, but a bit tired looking (furnishings appeared quite dated (like, 1960's), but were in fairly good condition). The bath had been renovated - marble countertop for the sink, and new tiles, new bathtub. Hot water on demand, both bathtub and sink, which is unusual for Thailand. The beds were excellent, and the air conditioner worked well. The breakfast buffet was extensive, with eggs made to order and multiple choices, from salads, to fruit, to traditional Thai dishes. The hotel staff are helpful, but English is limited. The hotel appears to cater mostly to Thai nationals, as I only saw two foreigners (and hundreds of Thais) during my stay.

Helt OK”

Hotellet ligger helt ok om man vill ha närhet till stan och lägga tid på shopping och äta lite västerländsk mat. Kan vara ett bra stopp om man har varit ute på öar och är påväg tillbaka till Bangkok. Standarden på hotellet är helt ok och servicen är ganska bra.
