"We got to Yudanaka station from Tokyo station while arranging for us to be picked up at the station. When we got there, no one picked us up. Luckily, the information office called the ryokan for us and someone came to pick us up within 15mins. Aside from that, the whole stay was a pleasant getaway. We tried 4/8 baths that they had and each use was just us and we barely saw other people there. Dinner was a fabulous kaiseki feast. We strolled around the streets in our yukata and it was pretty quiet. In front of the ryokan itself, they sold Onsen cooked soft boiled eggs for ¥50 and that was delicious. We arranged with the ryokan to have them deliver our luggage to a coffee shop nearby Yudanaka station so that we could visit the snow monkey park. The ryokan also offered a ride to the monkey park where you walk for about 30mins to get to the entrance. As for your way back to Yudanaka station, you can either take a bus, taxi, or walk for about an hour. "

"It takes about 20 minutes to get to the hotel from Yudanaka station. At first, the hotel does look pretty old and worn out. However, if you ignore that, the rooms are absolutely massive, the staff, especially the receptionist, is such a friendly and lovely woman! I also loved the fact that you have a free onsen available on site. The bus stop is located 5 minutes away and from there you can get both in the direction of the station, as well as Monkey park and Shiga Kogen. Definitely recommended!"

"Paid $130ish per night weekdays for a family of 5. The room was an average Japanese room. It was small and clean with no frills. There is a men's and a women's public onsen. There is also 2 private onsens and both are a decent size. Did not eat at the hotels restaurant so can't comment. We were two families and did bring take out back to the hotel one evening. We were shown to a large room with tables to eat at and a karaoke machine and ping pong to play with. Was very close to the snow monkeys. About 4km. Not much else to do around the hotel for families, but there are plenty of restaurants near by. Would definitely stay here again. "

"Location is among the closest you can do to the Snow Monkey Onsen park, (20m by walk on a nice hiking trail), the Hotel itself is lovely and well maintained with nice food and extremely professional staff. Although we had not mentioned our arrival time and were planning to hike to the Hotel from the local train station, one driver was at the train station and literally came to us asking if we were called by (our names) as we arrived. "This was one of our best stays in Japan, not much in Yudanaka aside from a few excellent restaurants and the nearby snow monkeys but this hotel was really homely, with great facilities and we had a room with our private Onsen which was pretty amazing to use whenever we wanted, and covered slightly even with snowfall. We stayed two nights but maybe if we had more time and money we would have stayed another night to enjoy the fantastic facilities and food. The best prawn sashimi we ever had in Japan too. The Kiseki dinner was great, but should be at the price. "

"We spent 2 nights at Yudanaka Tawaraya Ryokan with our 4 year-old daughter. The Ryokan was just 5 mins away from Yudanaka station if you go down along the slope. Just a bit slippery when the slope is filled with snow, but it’s fine to walk slowly holding the handrail. The Ryokan is in tradition Japanese style operates by a family. The owner and her family members were very nice and very helpful. It always fully booked during peak season as they only provide around 10 rooms. It’s good to keep the business small so they can pay full attention to every family and respond quickly for their needs. Every family could reserve a time slot for private bath at the hot spring. It was a very nice experience when it was snowing and the snowflakes fell on your head. The Japanese style dinner and breakfast were amazing! They provided udon and desserts specially for my daughter too! We were so appreciated for their detailed minded. Don’t miss the free shuttle to the snow monkey which was 15 mins drive only. The second night we didn’t have our dinner there, they had a map which showed their recommended restaurants nearby. Highly recommended the traditional Japanese little home-style restaurant called “Isyokutei komadori”. Full of childhood memories when you first entered the restaurant. Price was cheap but food was very delicious! Just 1 min walk from the Ryokan. We enjoyed our stay there and we love this little town so much! "

"Amazing ryokan which is run, and had, a family personable feel to it. Great location in Shibu Onsen to try all 9 public hot spring baths (good fortune if you do them all!) as well as see the snow monkeys in Jigokudani monkey park. Delicious dinner and breakfast included in ryokan price which made it very good value. Also free shuttle to and from Yudanaka station and to monkey park. "

"The owner was very nice, he drove us to the Snow monkey area free of charge. Accommodations are quite ok for the price, place and room is clean. Wifi is very good. You'll be able to find the place when you ask the people in the information area at the yudanaka train station. They could answer you in English and give you easy directions to the place. Didn't try food in the place, but the owner will give restaurant suggestions along the area."

"We had a very nice stay at this hotel. There didn't seem to have many foreign tourists coming to this Onsen town(Shibu Onsen) as compared to Yudanaka (which has the main train station). It is a 20-30 min walk from Yudanaka to Shibu. However, Shibu Onsen is much smaller and has a more authentic feel. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful from check-in to check-out although they do not speak English. We had dinner and breakfast there. Although they were not the cheapest meals, if you want to experience traditional ones, it is worth the try. The waitresses spoke better English. After going back home, we received a few days after from mail a scarf that I had forgotten in the room and did not realize it was left there! "
