This 3 1/2 star hotel's service puts many 5-stars to shame. I arrived via ferry from Bau Bau to Makassar at the ungodly hour of 3AM. Best to sit tight at the ferry terminal and wait until sunrise. At 06:00 I walked to the Grand Populare enjoying the scenery and hoped only to be able to stash my luggage at the hotel. Much to my surprise, and gratitude, I was checked in. At 06:30. That has never happened before. At least not to me. Breakfast wasn't ready yet ... it was too early in the morning ... but was offered. Instead I collapsed into my bed and slept until late morning. The room is clean, the queen sized bed comfy, the air conditioning was gentle - not a meat locker - and even HBO on the tele. The staff are friendly, English is limited, but the manager, Mr. is fluent. There is an excellent Old Holland bakery a few doors up the street for those missing a taste of pastry and creme. A touch of home. The only downside is that the wifi signal needs to be boosted so that it reaches the upper floors. The shower was a slow drainer but not wanting to be a nuisance I didn't report it. I know, I know. How else would they know. Check out time is 1:00 pm, and an afternoon of catching up on work in the dining room (good wifi here), and dinner at 5:00 at the Chinese Bar-B-Q, next to the bakery, is excellent for that long wait for the overnight bus to Tana Toraja. Makassar is not a city for an afternoon stroll. Unless you like choking on dust, diesel fumes, and dodging trucks. An overly enthusiastic review. Sure. But I am still grateful for the very early check-in and early evening check-out. And no extra charges!

Clean room, centrally located”
It was fine for the price. Breakfast choice was limited but they did an omelette for us which was tasty. The guards in the front are very nice. I would go again to this hotel if I had to stay in Makassar for a short visit. The only thing that can be a little bit problematic is the language (almost no one speaks English...)

We came back to the Populer Hotel because we liked it the first time a lot. The second time we got an even nicer room but at the weekend, there seem to hang around a lot of young people in the hotel who are really loud...

Good location, good value for money”
You get what you pay for. Room pretty big, also big bathroom. It was clean, but not so well maintained. Breakfast ok, nothing special. Great surrounding! Lot of local foods around. Try Mie Titi, local Makassar food. When u leave the hotel turn right and than there was a small local restaurant offering Mie Titi! Fort Rotterdam, Losari Beach all not so far away.

Nice short stay”
Centrally located in the middle of China town. Plenty of shops around. Close to Fort Rotterdam (5 min walk from hotel). Souvenir shop are walking distance as well the famous small restaurant "Soto Nusantara" which is selling favorite Makasar food, Soto Makasar. If you want to use the Damri bus from airport to city and opposite way, this hotel is perfect because the Damri shuttle is just 3 min walk to reach. Hotel room was clean with basic toiletries, fresh towel, tea/coffee maker and tv cable. Staffs were excellent and despite breakfast menu has limited option, me and my friend was enjoyed our breakfast time.

Good place to stay”
This hotel is near the waterfront and Fort in a big bustling city that can be a little unpleasant. The Hotel is new though some of the fittings are already showing signs of wear. Smoking rooms appear to be the norm and its difficult to escape from it.We had a good room reasonable quiet, however the piped music had a speaker outside our room which was so loud that it drowned out the TV in our room. After a few hours, however, I asked if they could turn it off and they did quite happily. I know it sounds trivial but it was driving us nuts and they were good about our request.

Enjoyed our stay here. The staff were very friendly. The room was great, very comfortable and a good size. The TV was great with pay TV. Everything was fine at this hotel, nothing to complain about. The price was good too.

What I was really like from this hotel is very clean. That make me stay very comfortable in hotel room. Breakfeast is simple, only some of choice but really good taste, I like it ! But the hotel management should cut the price, too expensive than another hotel around. I think I can get a greater hotel with that rate.

Satisfied 1 night stay”
I arrived passed midnight from Tana Toraja road trip. Only got a chance to sleep & rest little bit next day. I did not get a chance to see the hotel surrounding because I was already in a car on the next day. Shower has nice hot water, bed is large enough, AC working... all fine for 2* hotel type.

Well appointed BUT”
Although this is a new hotel the smell of damp in the room was overpowering and we asked to change rooms which they did for us as soon as they could. The new room was better, however it smelled of cigarette smoke. There is also a colony of birds living in the building next door, not the fault of the hotel but they were extremely noisy all night. Avoid the top floor and back end of the higher floors.

Nice basic hotel ”
Nice hotel for this kind of budget. This hotel is fairly new according to the local, so it's still considerably clean. Close to Losari beach and many great restaurant around the city. The staff is also friendly. I was 2 hours late for checkout, but they didn't charge anything.

Good Stay for transit”
I stay on this hotel for our transit night before go back to Kuala Lumpur the next morning. We found this hotel quite hard to find because it is located around the old buildings area. Hotel lobby looks great. I would like to give my compliment to one of the female receptionist in the morning which is really friendly. She always smile to us and willing to help us for our vacation arrangement. When we first come to the hotel to check in, she already ask on our vacation plan and suggest a lot of places to visit. We went out for shopping and when we came back, she still asking on how our trip goes on and she keep on give us more information. We felt like VIP when staying there as she is giving us on very excellent hospitally service. I hope the hotel management and see this comment and give compliment to her. We believe more people will choose this hotel in the future if there is such helpful and friendly receiptionist likes her. Hotel's room quite old but clean and comfortable. Breakfast just occay and simple. Good hotel for transit stay.

Great location but room is small”
I stayed here for my business trip. The hotel is located pretty central very close to shops and restaurants. However if you bring car then the parking could be a problem during peak hours. The room was small and not well maintained as a new hotel.

New hotel, decent location”
i think this used to be a shop that has been converted into a hotel. there are a few restaurants and minimarts in this business street, but you can stroll to nusantara not too far away, and just south of that is the area near fort rotterdam where the youth hang out at night. hotel itself is new and clean, staff is friendly and helpful.
