Friendly staff better then in hotels with five stars! They helped on any request we had!!! Very spacious, clean, functional room! Great bathroom with fantastic gadgets such as tv in bathtub, drying and “ironing” ac mode in bathroom - things that we Europeans would love in our bathrooms!!! Situated in a quiet residential area. Easily access to tourist spots by buses from the bus stops very near guest house. From Kyoto station, can take bus 206 from platform A3. Guest house is after the 3rd bus stop. The place was very clean

Good value apartment in Kyoto ”
Well priced and reasonably located apartment in Kyoto. Our studio apartment had most of the mod cons (including a PC and desk), and was very clean. The bed was very comfortable. Having a rear facing apartment was great as it was very quiet. The check in and check out process was straightforward. There wasn't a lot surrounding the apartment but it wasn't too far from the action either. We were able to walk to Kyoto station. Would definitely stay here again.

Almost good location, but not to close to any grocery or shops and cafe, helpful staff. No elevator in guesthouse and narrow stairs.

Do NOT stay at this hotel!!! Almost all rooms face an extremely busy road (Omiya), which they (will) fail to mention on their ads and homepage, causing rooms to vibrate and shake all through the day and night – Good luck sleeping. Booking in advance and stating your preference for at least a respite, in a different room, will fall on deaf ears. Management will not help, despite pleading, making this the only option to warn future hotel seekers to AVOID this hotel. OYO should check property standards when allowing them to join their company group. BE WARNED !!!

Neat and quiet”
Booked for five nights and requested a room at the back of the hotel after reading other reviews about road noise. It was very quiet. Location is good, with a bus stop literally steps from the front door. NB: from Kyoto station, make sure to catch the 206 from bus bay A3 - this one heads northwest towards Shijo Omiya. Alight at Shimabaraguchi. (The 206 service from bus bay D2 goes northeast towards Gion - we found this out the hard way, with luggage in tow as well!). Fewer nearby restaurants than other, busier parts of Kyoto. Kyoto station is reasonably nearby (15 - 20 mins) with lots of food options - Porta Dining on B1 has plenty of excellent choices. Just southeast of the station (also 15 - 20 min walk) is an AEON mall, with a food floor, including a food court, on the 4th floor. Room is well set-up, and a good size in comparison to a Japanese hotel room. We really appreciated the extra space. It also has an excellent Japanese-style bathroom and a little kitchenette, but definitely BYO kitchen utensils if you want to eat in. Two mugs and some paper cups are provided, there is also a stove-top kettle and small fridge/freezer. The only drawback was that the bed was really hard, I could feel the springs in the mattress. The staff member we met - Masa - was very helpful and spoke good English. The check-in system works very well, especially if you arrive outside of office hours. I would definitely choose to stay here again.

Great place to stay while in Kyoto”
Cool receptionist, provided us with a lot of help and was really friendly. The guesthouse is located right beside the Shimabaraguchi bus station. There is a 7-11 nearby too. Kitchen amenities and toiletries are supplied, room condition is very satisfying. They even have a desktop PC provided. Would totally visit this guesthouse if I ever come to Kyoto again.

An Accomodation that Fits the Bill!”
Highland Shimabara on first glance seems unassuming & possibly “bare bones”, but that would be inaccurate. When we first arrived, I was wondering if we had made the right choice for accommodations, but this was soon confirmed and proved to be true during our seven night stay. The location has a neighborhood feel and is quiet enough, yet with close proximity to Kyoto Station. The 206 bus stop is right outside, and this is one you can easily use to get to and from Kyoto Station or in the other (north) direction, to many of Kyoto’s main sights. The staff was friendly and very helpful. They rented us bicycles for approximately $5 a day, sold us discounted one-day bus passes, and answered questions. WiFi worked great and our room, bathroom facilities, and kitchenette were perfect. The only slight criticism we might give is the pillows were very hard.....maybe more Japanese style and not what we’re used to. We were very satisfied with this choice and location!

Good points already mentioned in others review. Take bus 206 from Kyoto station and alight at the fourth bus stop (Shimabaraguchi-岛原口）and walk backwards. The hotel is just infront of the pedestrian crossing.

Spacious”
If you don't mind walking, this hotel is for you. The 20 minute walk from Kyoto station is worth every step (I need my daily 10k steps). We loved the room since it was very spacious for 2 people. There was a kitchen with stove, microwave, ref, TV, computer and a study desk. The bathroom was also big enough. I only gave 4 stars for the "staff" since we didn't encounter them much during our stay, since instructions were already provided from check in to check out. I would definitely stay here again.

Self check in and check out. Staff is nice and the room is very clean. There is washing machine and you can dry your clothes with the drying function in bath room. Computer is also available that I can use to check info online and listen some music. Wifi is also good in the room. when you check out, you can go to the place (hostel provided) near the kyoto station , which is free for this hostel guest to keep your luggage till to 9pm. you can free to shopping on the last day! One problem is the location is a little bit far away from the station (20 mins) or you can take bus (10 mins). Anyway, I will still consider to book again and recommend you to book too.
