Superb location to kiyomizu Temple”
Arrived early with a taxi from kyoto train station which cost $15USD. Or you can take a Raku bus no. 100 from Kyoto station for less than 3USD one way, bus will stop at the area called Gojozaka. Location is great as its the same road towards kiyomizu temple which means its a walking distance to the temple. Host speaks good english and is very friendly and understanding. You can easily catch a bus at the main street to Gion area etc. Outside hanakiya inn, is a small japanese house cafe, i love ambience and the matcha shake there. Remember to have matcha shake when you go there and you will get 100yen off the bill if you are staying in hanakiya inn.

Second time visitors -- will return again someday”
We last stayed at the Hanakiya Inn with Eimi and her family 7 years ago. We had a wonderful time then, so when we next returned to Kyoto, we made a return visit. Our stay was just as great this time (though sadly a bit shorter). In addition to the great hospitality, the inn is well-located -- near many tourist sites and restaurants. We hope to return to Japan in much less than 7 years next time -- and when we visit Kyoto again, we will return to Hanakiya Inn.

Amazing experience!”
If you want to enjoy a Japanese style vacation in Kyoto, come and stay in Hanakiya Inn! Very beautiful place. Clean and quiet. And they have the greatest location! Get up early and take a walk around. You will find the mornings in Kyoto even more attractive. Kyoto has very convenient bus lines. You can basically get to every tourist attraction by bus and on foot. If you want to go somewhere farther, the railway station is not faraway, either. I really love my four nights here, and I'll definitely come back.

Clean and accessible ”
Hanakiya Inn is near the famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple. You just have to walk for about 15 minutes to reach the area. While going up, you can enjoy eating at food stalls - takoyaki and matcha ice cream. The inn is also near the bus stop and the taxi stop. There are also conveninece stores like Lawson, which is just a few steps away. Hanakiya Inn is clean. Eimi-san is also good in explaining the map in English. She was so warm and entertaining when we stayed in Kyoto. Arigatou!

Our favourite ryokan in Japan”
Hanakiya kyoto This ryokan nabs top slot as favourite of our whole trip. The owner (Emi-San) greeted us with a huge smile and proceeded to point out all the best places plus the best hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Following her instructions we went to gyomizukazadera which was amazing. And when we came back she had left fresh strawberries for us. Really nice touch. The good: lots of light, very quiet and all the major fixtures seem new or refurbished. Not sure what some of the negative reviews are talking about here as we found everything clean and tidy. All the essentials are free: towels, yukata, shampoo/conditioner. The bad: nothing really. If this is your first ryokan experience, it's nothing like a western hotel, with shared bathroom/shower/sink and smallish spaces. But location and ownership make up for it. Highly recommend, 5 stars.

Excellent location”
Emie-san was great, prompt communication, extremely helpful and nice, and dropped off gifts. Hanakiya Inn's location is excellent, right by Kiyomizudera temple and close to Gion and East Kyoto sights. Its about a 5min walk to the bus stop to major sightseeing areas. The inn itself is basic, your room, shared bathroom/shower/sink, shared living area with complimentary tea and coffee. Shared areas were clean, well-stocked, no-issues. Rooms reminded me of air-bnb type settings, with Emie-san easily reached upstairs. Not as well-kept or impeccable as a hotel but no major concerns. Homey.

Fantastic stay”
Wonderful stay at Hanakiya inn - it was quiet during the night which was a nice break from the crowds of kyoto. The inn was walking distance to a range of shrines and a 15-20 minute walk to the closest train station. Eimi and her husband are amazing and welcoming hosts, definitely recommend.

Recommended!!”
The Hanakiya Ryokan was exceptional. Beautifully presented, and clean rooms. The owner was extremely generous and friendly (she gave us the most delicious strawberries we had ever tasted!). The rooms are pretty and we had everything we needed. It is located in a very beautiful part of Kyoto, with temples in walking distance. Highly recommended!!!

Excellent location and awesome host”
We enjoyed our stay at Hanakiya Inn immensely. We ended up at the Annex rather than the main house, which was actually even more convenient to get in and out of the Inn. We were there during peak Fall Color season and the road to Kiyomizu-dera is often very crowded - day and night! However, it was easy to get in and out of the annex with several buses nearby on the main road. The hotel was clean and our host was awesome! So friendly and helpful with lots of local information. It was a rather cold several nights but the heater in the room worked well. On our final night there, our host left us extra blankets to make sure we were warm! We were a little worried about the shared bathrooms but this was not an issue as there are not many rooms, so not many people to share with and there was never any wait for the facilities. The microwave was very convenient to have as well, as we were able to buy coffee at the local convenience store and heat it up in the morning, so we didn't have to brave the world without our morning cuppa joe! Overall, it was a great experience.

good place and good host”
We stayed in the annex of Hanakiya Inn, which is a few meters from the main inn. While it's further from Kiyomizudera, it's nearer the bus stop (which will be your main mode of transportation in Kyoto). Our host, Eimi-san, was very kind. She spoke very good English and so we were able to easily relay any concerns to her. The rooms use futons as bed so if you would like a regular bed, I suggest a different place. But if you're up to experience Japanese culture, then go book with Hanakiya :)

Friendly, comfortable and affordable”
This hotel presents an opportunity to stay in a Japanese style inn at an affordable price. It is clean and comfortable with all the essentials. Perfect as a base for a few days to explore Kyoto. We arrived late at night and had a hard time finidng the place (make sure you have a map) and it helped to get a warm welcome from the friendly owner. The inn has a cozy feel and a nice common area that makes it easy to mingle with fellow travelers.

Nice location, little noisy”
The stay in Hanakiya Inn was nice. It was very near to the heritage side of Kyoto and a short Bus ride to Kyoto Station and the Gion district. Since it is close to the Temples, be prepared that it gets noisy very early. Also you can hear every step of all other guests - we were staying in the annex II, in case you have children staying at the place the same time you will not find any sleep. Otherwise it was very nice, clean and the hosts are lovely.

Hostess With The Mostess”
The hotel is a traditional Japanese place, meaning sleeping on the floor on comfortable tatami mats. The host is super friendly, helpful and a joy to be around. She was curious always asking questions and was very pleasant. I would say she is the main selling point for the hotel. The location is GREAT since it is close to the main temple and close to an express bus to Kyoto Station. To top it all off, it is affordable considering what is around. Next time I am in Kyoto, we will spend all our time here, if there is space.

Very Friendly English Speaking Lady Boss Eimi”
Friendly boss Eimi upgraded (w/o extra charge) our room at her new Ryokan, 5 mins away from main house. You can enjoy typical Ryokan (Japanese house), nice experience. The guest house is about 5 min walk to the nearest bus stop. Very convenient as bus is the most accessible transport to travel in Kyoto according to the lady boss. She was very attentive, informative and speak good English. She even prepared a set of Kyoto map upon our arrival. A very helpful boss. Will definitely stay there again !!

Exceptional”
Very comfortable place to stay, the family is very nice and checks in on you, offers help with the area, etc. I stayed for a bit over a week, and it was a great home base to explore Kyoto and surrounding areas from (I noticed most people while I was there staying only a night or two while checking out Gion, but it's definitely a great place for a longer stay!) Easy access to Kyoto station & bus routes to many interesting temples and tourist areas, as well as having many interesting places to explore in walking distance. Highly recommended!

Happy Camper”
Our stay at Hanakiya was very enjoyable. Our rooms were very clean . The shared bathroom and shower were spotless. It was like staying with family. ( the ones you like) . Eimi and Hiro, the hostess and host were charming and very helpful. Each evening Eimi would help me with suggestions for itineraries for the next day with instructions for correct bus or subway connections and on which side of the street to get the bus. I have no complaints !

Great traditional-style Ryokan”
This hotel is traditional-Japanese style and located in the Gion area of Kyoto, within wakling distance to Kiyomizudera - its design and location are very great for experiencing Kyoto culture. Access is simple by taking a ~20 min (depending of traffic conditions) bus ride from Kyoto Station and walking for ~5 min. Shared shower and toilets are very very clean, rooms have heater and the hosts were especially friendly with good English - they gave us free breakfast one morning! All in all, if you are looking to experience tranditional Japanese culture, I highly recommend this hotel!

Traditional Japanese-style Ryokan with good locati”
When we arrived at Hanakiya Ryokan, we were greeted by the friendly owner . We wanted to try a Japanese style hotel instead of the usual and this was it for us. Location was superb as it was only a couple of minutes walk to Kiyomizudera. There was a common area where tea, coffee, water were provided. 2 toilets were available however, there was only 1 shower. Means, you would have to take turns to bath. Apart from that, definitely recommended.
