Peaceful Hotel”
Most probably the most quiet hotel I’ve been to, the facilities are also clean and well maintained. The staff can also speak in English so it was really convenient for me to ask stuffs. Superb Experience. Will definitely book this hotel again.

the best best stay i had in kyoto!!”
i made some great friends during my stay here. the place is a 100yr old gem but still in great shape, small, comfy, cosy, beautiful. you get free breakfast in the morning which is tea porridge. its so nice to snug in kotatsu, have a hot drink and talk to other solo travellers in a cold autumn evening. also higashiyama is my most favorite neighborhood in kyoto so everything is perfect.

Lovely stay but understand what you’re booking”
Beautiful 100year old little traditional house but we had no idea of this before we turned up. House rules should be listed on agoda. You have to take extra care not to make too much noise and need to move quietly through the house - not great if you have big travelling rucksacks. The stairs are very steep, narrow and noisy. The toilets are outside too. The shower is nice but you’re potentially sharing with 8 other people so need to time it well or wait. Earplugs are a must for this place plus our room was quite cold and the heater wasn’t great. It’s very beautiful but very inconvenient to be sharing with so many other people. Would be better suited to two couples only. Also no communication from the manager which was a bit disappointing with regards to leaving our bags. Enjoyable overall but glad we only had the two nights booked.

Budget historic option with drawbacks”
My sister and I stayed at this hostel for four nights and have mixed feelings. Pros: historic home with authentic 100-year-old architecture, good location near Gion, comfortable beds, very affordable Cons: Toilets are on the main floor and outside, a big drawback for a winter stay. The interior is also not well insulated--understandable given its age, but still a problem in the winter (there is a semi-effective heater in the room!). We did not see a single staff person during our stay, which surprised us since it wasn't marketed as a self-serve place. To the hostel's credit, self check-in instructions were clear. However, we would have liked to give the money for additional fees (city tax and towels) directly to someone, rather than just leave it in the room. Additionally, the common area was not cleaned regularly. Trash was very full and toilet paper running low on day 3 of our stay. I messaged the host in the morning and when we returned in the evening things had been replaced, which was good. But it seemed odd that no one came to check the place for three days (perhaps longer if we hadn't notified them...). Overall, we would recommend for a shorter, self-sufficient stay when the weather is warmer :)

Above average”
No bidet in the toilet but I understand if they’re trying to keep the traditional design of the house. Just worth noting for people like me who cannot live without bidets.

Good Location”
The hostel is easy to locate. Just 2min walk from Higashiyama subway station and 3min walk from Higashiyama Sanjo bus station. Located in the Furukawa shopping street. Walking distance to Gion and Karawamachi district. Staff are very friendly and helpful. My booking was 5nights stay in female dormitory however I was given 3 nights stay in their private room! Positive surprise! The downside is, the hostel has only one shower room. Hence you have to take turn or wait till late hour to shower. Because the building is a 100yo Japanese traditional house, the wall is paper thin. You can literarily hear people snoring from the next room. Peraonally I would prefer a more happening backpacker stay with activities, so that I can have the opportunity to meet other travellers. Hostel Haruya is more quiet. Overall is a pleasent stay in Hostel Haruya.

Nice and Quaint”
Pros: location is just a minute from the Higashiyama line; staff were VERY helpful, the ambiance is very traditional Japan, the area has a lot of shops, and it has been kept very clean and well-maintained. Cons: it's a hundred-year-old house so it creaks a lot and you can hear every bit of noise around the house so if you're planning to spend most of your day inside, be prepared. Also the toilets did not have a bidet but that's just a minor issue. Overall, I would return to this place.

Sleeping in an ancient house”
Wonderful position, one minute walking from the subway station of Higashiyama, in a quiet and characteristic neighborhood. We slept in a comfortable triple room with shared (and always very clean) bathroom. All the staff, and especially Kaori, has been extremely kind, and helpful. Absolutely recommended.

Bank for buck, but bring earplugs.”
The twin room(s) are nice, amenities are well and solid. We had the twin room below, next to entrance and reception. So I bit noisy. The guests above us came 'home' in the middle of the night, and the floor sqeaked a lot. It is an old building. If you takes this into consideration you'll have a nice stay for about 50$. I would not spend much more on this room, an the other hand it was Kyoto and quite last minute. Location is the strong point here, right next to subway and Gion.

A traditional Japanese house near the Subway”
It is a well maintain traditional Japanese house turns guesthouse. Less than 5 mins walk to Higashyama station , great for sightseeing around this area if you would like take a break from hustle and bustle of Kyoto Station area. Clean room with necessary amenities. As there is only one shower room , at time need to wait for the turn to take shower during peak hour, not the major issues though. Overall recommended !!

Toilet is cold! but, service is truly great!”
we couldn't find our way in the beginning due to the bus drop off place is not in front of the street. locals know the location. we managed to get a local girl to show us the location. it is a lively street in the morning after 9am..but it is very quiet at night. there is a nearby convenient store. so...if u wanna save your dinner or breakfast money, u can easioy get the japanese noodles cup in the convenient store. you even can get sake if u walk further around 4 blocks away. the staff lends us the accomodation's umbrella. unfortunately, our nice umbrella has been exchanged by another person when we were eating in a restaurant (keeping outside). going to the toilet n bath room r really cold when it is winter time. it is behind the gathering room. however, we still can accept it. becareful of the staircase, u will be reminded by the staff..so don't worry. we have a great stay here!

Exceptional”
Traditional Japanese style house, very polite and helpful staff, good location. It was the first time for me to visit Japan, and this place and staff really gave me very very good impression of Japan. Although the room is small and narrow, the bed was very comfortable and clean.

Very good”
Chose this place out of curiosity of staying at a 100-year-old Japanese building. It looks like a 100-year-old building and it feels like one too. The room is very small, and the shower and the bathroom is downstairs (all rooms are upstairs). The stair going to the second floor is quite scary. It's pretty steep. However, the staff was very very nice, and he was really kind and was willing to provide for my needs. He was very polite, and even offered me to take a picture in front of the hostel when I was checking out. Not sure if I would go back to this place, but it was worth trying once.

I'll give 9 out of 10 since it provides cooking utensils though the room is a bit small.
