"If you are looking for the traditional Japanese experience this is a great place to stay. Kind and helpful staff with reasonable English, spotlessly clean and lots of beautiful details. Rooms are very big. The location is convenient both for Kyoto University, and for downtown Kyoto (2 stops on the metro or a 25 minute walk by the river). I stayed 5 nights in connection with visiting Kyoto University which is a 10 minute walk away. If staying in winter please note that the bathrooms are not heated. This is easy to get used to but perhaps not exactly what you want when you climb off a long-haul flight. Same goes for the bed, which is traditional mattress rolled out on the floor - it's ok but not the most comfy thing to sleep on if you are used to a Western bed and need to sleep off your jet-lag. Also - which is mainly a problem for business travellers - the wifi is unstable from the rooms, though fine from the computers in the lobby. Bottom line, if you want to experience a traditional hotel this is a great choice. If you are looking for comfort above all else then probably best to go for a modern hotel."
