"It was nice surprise to stay in the such a lovely and clean hostel. I stayed in a Japanese room as a private room. If I could ask for any improvement, it would be to install a blackout Cuirtain over the windows. I had a trouble with the morning sunlight as there were only the thin white paper sliding screens in front of the glass windows so nothing to block the sunlight in the morning and the room was bright like day time at 5.30am and that woke me up. Also the outside of the bedroom was the common room with kitchen and eating area so that water tap noise, kettle noise, the noise moving the chairs on the wood flooring, even whispering talk (some people were there talking before 6am) were another problem. Very nice place and comfortable futon bed but if you would like to have a good night sleep, it would not be your place. There is curfew at 11pm so if you are to enjoy the night time experience, it also would not be the place for you. "

"Tomy & Tetu were so gracious, hospitable and accommodating. It was a nice walk to the KICC, and so much nicer than staying in a western-style hotel. It was like staying in a home. The hot breakfasts were a little bit different every day, the rooms very confirmable (AC was appreciated!), the bathroom and kitchenette accessibly and convenient, and the hosts just lovely. So friendly and open minded. It was a pleasure to stay here! I would highly recommend it. The little tea ceremony before breakfast one day was one of the highlights of my whole trip - thank you!"

"Great place to stay! It comes with amenities such as coin operated washing machine, umbrella you can borrow in a pinch, small personal fridge in your room and a simple communal laptop/internet setup if you don't have your own. The host also provide various services such as Kansai airport bus booking (2 or 3 days prior booking required) and help you post post-card if needed. It also has a little space for parking any bicycles you might bring or rent (Kyoto is super nice for cycling!). The room I stayed in can accommodate two people and was really spacious too! The futon along with tatami is supppper nice to sleep in even when it's 5 or 6 degrees. There's only two downside though. One, the rooms don't provide much noise insulation since it is a traditional Japanese ryokan, so do take care when showering late and using hair dryer. Two, transportation can be a bit tricky since it's not close to any major train stations, so you would need to take the bus which is 2min walk from the ryokan (Did I mention the host also sell One Day Bus passes too?). But then again, Kyoto is built as a "walking" city, so it doesn't have as much short distance transport as say Osaka, so in the end I rented a bicycle for two days and just cycled around town :) Overall, I would recommend this Ryokan is you want a quiet spacious and friendly place to stay in Kyoto!"

"Hotel is located about 5km (3.1 miles) from Kyoto Station, reachable by bus or taxi. JR train or metro subway is not available at that location. The hotel is far from the main activities or restaurants. Breakfast is fine but mainly served Japanese style food. My 14 and 15 year olds ate hotel breakfast on the first day but decided to eat ramen cup noodles for breakfast on the rest of the days. Thank God they have a kettle in the room. If you are dead tired after your tour and don't feel like eating out, bring food back to the hotel. There is a family mart nearby where you can get snack, food and drinks. Don't expect the hotel restaurant to serve dinner like any other restaurants. Reservation for dinner is required and they serve only dinner with 10 or more courses - cost about $350 for the 4 of us. It would have cost us more if we picked the more expensive package. It took us about close to 3 hours to finish dinner - not because we ate slow, we had to wait for each of the10 courses to be served sequentially. We had a quadruple room with 4 beds so it is of good size but the bathroom needed updating. There is not much counter space and water leaks from the showering because the shower curtain is not wide enough to cover the full length of the tub. Room is clean and housekeeping is done daily. There are however a few positive things: 1) the staff are very friendly and polite. They tried to be helpful but their limited English made it a challenge for us to ask for help. I had to use my translation app at all time. 2) there is a little river or canal at the back of the hotel. It is lovely to take a walk down the river I would not be going back to this hotel because of its inconvenient location, we missed being near the main activities and restaurants. "
