Wonderful experience!”
This ryokan is located just down the street from the Zenkouji Temple, so the location is ideal. Onsen was relaxing, rooms were beautiful and clean. We doubled up our futons to save our backs lol. Breakfast was delicious, they were different each day and the variety was nice. Staff were very helpful and friendly, spoke some English and we could communicate just fine. I highly recommend this ryokan!

Exceptional”
This Ryokan is located a stone’s throw away from the Zenkō-ji Temple, and is perfectly situated amongst tourist strip that included food and souvenir vendors. We slept on futons, as is customary, and enjoyed the onsen which as wonderful in the midst of winter. The room has windows across two walls, so we could view the falling snow, and the neighbourhood was quiet at night. The inn is easily accessible from the station via bus, and also provides easy access to the temple’s morning service, which should be viewed at least once.

Great location, good place to stay”
Entrance smells like wood when you step in. Good view, quiet, traditional Japanese feel. Place is well maintained and the older gentlemen and ladies who run it care about your experience. 20-min walk from Nagano station.

Great Ryokan to stay at”
Located in the heart of the city, 5 minutes by bus from the station, next to Zenkoji Temple, Niomon and Sammon gates, and Nakamise shopping street in front of the temple. The accommodation is surrounded by beautiful traditional Japanese houses that are open as shrines, restaurants, and various temples.

Excellent service, comfortable rooms, very peaceful and quiet”
We had a superb experience at the family-run Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan. It is located within the Zenkoji-ko temple grounds so it’s very peaceful. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating especially the grandad who was always at reception. Breakfast was really good homemade Japanese style breakfast that varied everyday that we were there. It takes about 25 mins to walk to Nagano station, bus stop and train station also nearby so perfect base for going around Nagano. The room was very clean and big enough for two travellers with suitcases. We highly recommend this place and we would stay here again next time we visit Nagano.

Historic onsen next to Zenkoji Temple”
Matsuya Ryokan is a small family-run ryokan with comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast. My partner and I stayed for one night, and we would recommend Matsuya to anyone looking for a comfortable ryokan in the perfect Nagano location. The room we stayed in came complete with a private ensuite, but there are also rooms available with a shared bath.

Splendid ryokan near Zenkō-ji Temple”
Two nights as a single traveler. My summary is that you would be hard pressed to find a better place to stay in Nagano. What impressed me the most was the staff - exceedingly kind, gracious, helpful and thoughtful. For example: one morning I left breakfast with forgetting that I asked them to bring me coffee at the end. Well, five minutes later there was a knock on my door and standing there was one of the staff with my coffee. On the day I checked out, it was raining and I had not brought an umbrella. They asked me if I had one, and when I said no, they pulled one of theirs out and insisted I take it as a gift. This was all on top of comfortable accommodations, an in-house onsen, and delicious local ingredients for meals. The only caveat is that the surrounding area shuts down at night, so walking the street at 9 pm was deserted and quiet. But that could be a +/- depending on what you like. This was the best ryokan of the 6 I have stayed in.

A wonderful stay in Nagano! Splendid and very kind hosts.”
We did not partake in meals at the Ryokan, but we enjoyed our stay immensely. We had booked a room with a shared bathroom, but when we arrived the room we were given included a private bathroom. The tatami matted room was very spacious. As we were departing, one of the hosts gifted us with a wonderfully delicious apple. We would definitely stay again if we ever get back to Nagano.

Perfect for a visit to Sensouji temple - an authentic Japanese experience”
The ryokan is located at the spot where the original main hall of the Sensouji temple stood before it burned down 300 years ago. This is a very old ryokan, but with great charm. As the ryokan is located on the main temple street there are lots of small stalls and shops to check out, and not to mention the Sensouji temple just down the street. If you want to go see the small procession of the monks in the morning (参拝) this ryokan is simply the best. I've added more photos and details about the stay at my blog adventuresofanette.

The place to stay in Nagano”
The property is in the middle of the temple area, just over a mile from Nagano station. It is beautifully maintained and in the middle of everything. The staff are wonderful and the facilities are immaculate. I have already recommended it to family who are traveling to Japan later this year.

Amazing Ryokan”
My girlfriend and I found this ryokan perfect and a great location close by Zenkoji Temple. It was so peaceful here - not too loud despite being in a little street with shops. The staff was great and the room was awesome. We had the room that had their own private bathroom (toilet and shower). There is also an onsen for the public which was very nice. They offer breakfast and dinner (not included in price of room) which was amazing. We did breakfast both mornings we were there. If you're looking to have a Japanese breakfast, this is definitely the route to go. It wasn't the same meal each day, so that was great. The food was awesome! We didn't venture too far outside the main area of the shops and Zenkoji during our short stay here, but there was plenty to see. There are other restaurants and konbini within walking distance, so this was a great place. I would recommend this place to anybody!

Excellent ryokan, delicious dinner, very good service”
We were staying in this ryokan for the second time (first was in 2012). I was glad to notice that the level of service did not dropped since, everything was perfect, and the kaiseki dinner served in the room was still delicious. A little change though - instead of futon on the tatami directly we had this time 2 western beds in the bedroom (however the style of the living room was still traditional), first it was somewhat a disappointment (we like traditional ryokans) but eventually we felt happy as the beds were quite comfortable.

A Great Place to stay”
This is a great ryokan, just steps from Jenko-ji temple. It is a Japanese style inn, with tatami mats. You will be sleeping and sitting on the tatamis. The bathroom is down the hall. If you are comfortable with this, the ryokan cannot be beat. The breakfast is wonderful and served in your room; The staff are friendly, most with limited English. But hey, it is better than my Japanese. I highly recommend it for a taste of traditional Japan.
