Super friendly owner ”

The house was over 118 years old, and thus an amazing place to stay at. It is quite noisy because of the wooden walls but at night everyone tries to be as quiet as possible. The lady owning the establishment is super super friendly! She made us feel so welcome, and was always in for a chat. Once I told her I liked learning Japanese she taught me a few words and told me welcome home in Japanese everytime we came back. Since they clean the house between 11 and 16 you have to be out, which isn't always convenient but we worked our way around that.

Central, traditional and beautiful”

Location was outstanding, right behind a beautiful temple, and so close to the geiko area, near Gion corner and close to the delicious eating strip of Pontocho Alley. Easily accessible by bus - city line, and the bike rental is competitive. There's a 7 11 around the corner for international money exhange too.

Takeshi is the best 「たけしが最高」!”

Centrally located in the geisha district of Gion, there is much to see and do nearby. Travel within Kyoto is more reliant on the bus network than trains and the guesthouse is within 100 meters of the nearest stop. The guesthouse rooms are traditional Japanese-style and very well kept. If you are not used to sleeping on bed rolls, you may want to ask for an extra to stack, if available. There is a shrine near the guesthouse and some of the rooms have great views of it and their kimono wearing patrons, making it seem like you were taken back in time. Our stay coincided with the beginning of the 2020 global pandemic, so many businesses were closing. Despite this, our host Takeshi provided excellent hospitality and was able to recommend many things to see and do to make our time in Kyoto memorable. If you're reading this Takeshi, I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Thank you for the great experience and stay awesome!

Very good”

She is a good owner. The problem is just the check-in procedure. You should arrive at day, be sure not to arrive at night because it's so hard to contact her. So i have to wait outside for a while untill a customer go out and find me and let me in. So, just make sure arrive at day. Overall it's a good place.

Lovely, traditional-style Kyoto guesthouse”

PROS: - extremely friendly, helpful, multilingual, efficient staff/owner (She was so sweet!) - gorgeous house - nice facilities - excellent location - less than 10 mins’ walk to Gion area CONS: - glass-panelled sliding doors on single room allowed in light from sensor lights every time another guest walked around the house - other guests somewhat disregarded the nighttime noise reduction guidelines put in place by the owner Overall, I had a lovely stay at Kyoto Guesthouse Lantern in Gion, and would gladly suggest it to anyone! 😊

Cozy place with an awesome host! :) ”

Good price, new, great host

I travelled together with a friend and had no place to stay in Kyoto. Luckily we found a guesthouse through this site which made our stay in the city so much better! The guesthouse was so new they didn't even have a proper sign outside, but that "problem" is no more. When we entered inside (a few hours early) our host Takeshi-san met us up with a bright smile. With my not so overly amazing skills in japanese I made myself understood and we could leave our luggage and come back later and walk around in Gion while waiting to check in. When we got back we had a small tour in the house and met a lot of interesting people! The host can speak and understand english, but it was more fun trying to speak with him and some of the others in japanese. Tl;dr - Great guesthouse!

A homey hostel”

Homey, convenient location

It's great to have a social area in lantern, people can easily make friends. The host is nice. However, at night it would be a little bit noisy if there are insensitive tourists living there. If u have high demand on sleeping environment then lantern might not be a very good choice.

This is a great place to stay in Kyoto. The price is decent, and the staff is very friendly. The room is clean and very traditional. The wall is quite thin so if you plan to be loud, then it is not a good place to be. I love staying here with my family. It is really peaceful.

Nice Guesthouse in Gion”

The location is very good. With the bus 206 it is not far from Kyoto Station. And you do not have to walk far for the many things to see in Gion. The place is nice an thr owner friendly and helpful. The only thing is that the curtains in front of the beds could be thicker to create more privacy. And the coffee and tea is not for free.
