Great Family Stay”
The Minshuku Kuwataniya Ryokan really suited our family of 5 (3 daughters aged 13, 10 and 6). It was by far the most economical accommodation we could find for the 5 of us in Takayama. The girls really enjoyed the Kimonos and Onsen. As a bonus, the location of the Ryokan is excellent, 5 mins walk from train station and 5-10 mins walk from most of the city attractions in Takayama and the best restaurant in Takayama is just around the corner. Although the English of the hosts was not very good they did everything to help us enjoy our stay. I would highly recommend for large families to stay here.

Clean and cosy room + great service from staff!”
The location was easily accessible by walking from Takayama Station even with luggages in tow. There are plenty of restaurants nearby. As takayama is quite a small town, we walked everywhere! The ryokan Japanese room was spacious for 2, with wardrobes and futons. The room was warm enough during winter too. The shared onsen (public bath) for ladies was located just next to my room so that's definitely a plus! The futons and pillows were very comfortable. The whole place felt like a comfortable home. Highly recommended! Thanks for the great service from the staff! Appreciate it. :)

Value-for-Money Ryokan Experience”
We stayed 2 nights at this ryokan and had a wonderful and comfortable stay. It was only a short walk from the JR Takayama station and we did not have any trouble pulling our heavy luggage from the station to the ryokan. Upon checking in, you'll find a ready flask of hot water with green tea sachets and Japanese rice crackers waiting in your room. Thought it was a nice touch. The flask of hot water is also refilled daily. As with most traditional ryokans, there is no lift and it can be difficult if you're traveling with a huge/heavy luggage. There is also no toilet/shower in your own room. The male and female toilets were located on different floors so it can be inconvenient if you've to go upstairs/downstairs just to use the toilet. The public shower area (separate for men and women) includes a small indoor onsen. Shower area and toilets were kept very clean. Do note that the shower area is only open at certain times of the day (7am-10am and 4pm-10pm).

Excellent”
Clean ryokan that was 15 mins walk from the station, and not difficult to locate using Google Maps. 20 mins walk away from main tourist attractions. But Takayama is a small city. Although it was a shared bathroom, we had no problems with it, and all basic amenities were available. Room remained sufficiently warm thought out our stay despite the cold winter. Note that there's no elevator and if your room is not on the first floor you'd have to carry your luggages up. Overall satisfactory stay. Thank you, Kuwataniya!

Great location but small rooms”
Minshuku Kuwataniya Hotel is a great hotel. It has a good location althought the room is quite small. But it also has a big car park for parking which is free. There is a famous restaurant 丸明, but it close at 20:30. The most pity was we went there from Nagoya and arrived hotel almost 20:00, so we can't have dinner there.

great location, charming japanese style room and b”
The minshuku locates in front of the temple, and close to the old streets of Takayama city. Not far away from the main station so that travelers can get in and out easily. A good choice to travel to Shiragawa, too. Moreover, its bathroom is hot spring, quite charming and confortable.

Close to Takayama JR station, kidness keeper, home sweet home style”
Around 10min walk from Takayama JR station & Nohi bus station. There is an ancient japanese temple at the front of this hotel. A lot shops and restaurants are located around. You can take a another 5-10mins walk to the Takayama main street for shopping or having a dinner. The hotel's keeper is very helpful but dont expect she can speak english. Simple body language is workable. One of the main point for picking this hotel, it is very clean. U dont need the worry anything about the tidiness. They have a hot spring bath room, even they dont have any room with private washroom and I have totally no problem with this.

Great experience staying in the ryokan”
Staffs were very friendly and welcoming. On the day we arrived, Takayama was snowing heavily, and our luggages were covered with snow and wet. They quickly helped us to clean our luggage and our shoes. The room was japanese tatami style, very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was nice. Dining room and bathroom were also very clean. One concern we were shy to use a public bathroom/onsen with strangers.

Nice pleasant quiet minshuku near attractions”
The ryokan was walkable from Takayama train station in about 15 min along the roads. Relatively flat so even with large luggage on rollers it is walkable. It is located on a side street that is very quiet and peaceful next to the temple. The ryokan itself is in traditional style with shared bath. The room was nice, the only weakness being that the heater could not be turned on - although it is already spring, but the night was still chilly. Thankfully had nice warm blankets. The owners can't really seem to speak much English, but was quick in their service.

Superb and confortable hotel”
I went to 9 cities during my 16 days trip with my family. This was the only japanese style hotel I had and the most comfortable in my whole trip. We stayed on the 3rd floor, ad I have to carry all my luggage up the stairs, Shared bathroom, big room with wifi available, and my first time trying onsen here. Will definitely be back if I'm going to Takayama again.

Great location, great breakfast”
We hopped into this one after needing to cancel another at short notice. Already in Takayama meant we knew something about town layout and this was well placed for shops railway and food places. Staff spoke enough English, freindly and very efficient. We took breakfast on the 2nd day and were blown away by the quality, variety and quantity. Only downside for me...the male travelling with 3 female family members....was my bathroom was downstairs and the stairs nearest me were very steep and narrow....not good if you a bit older in the middle of the night. This minor blemish did not detract and i wished had found this earlier and would definetly stay again. ..even if only to try the dinner.

Great Ryokan”
Great place to stay in Takayama. Super comfy. Just note there is no elevator, so it'll be difficult if you bring big suitcase.

Basic comfort ”
For the price, the minshuku is good value because of its location. The rooms are on the first and second floors but the men's bath and toilet are on the ground floor. There is no lift so it's a trudge up and down the stairs if you have to go in the middle of the night!
