Still exceptional”
Sumire-Sou and I have a history going back about 10 years. My ex-girlfriend and I were going to the Takayama festival which is located one train station away from Hida-Ichinomiya, where Sumire-Sou is located. Hida is a small town that has very little touristy things to do. You don't end up here accidentally. You have to be looking for it. Luckily, we ended up here. By the time we decided to go to the festival, everything in Takayama was booked so we looked a little farther afield and found Sumire-Sou. It is a small, family run inn which is very nice. What we didn't expect was the amazing multi-course dinner that was beyond anything you would expect in a small place like this. It left a lasting impression. So, here it was 10 years later and my travel companion and I were in Japan heading from Nagano to Kyoto. Hida is roughly half way between them. On a whim, I suggested we do a stop over and stay at Sumire-Sou based on my memory of what a great dinner they served. After 10 years, I was prepared to be disappointed but luck was with me. I had thought the first dinner I had there was great but, if anything, the food was even better than I remembered from the first stay. The Hida beef was as tender as any I have ever had and the thick cut pieces of tuna sashimi were fresh and delicious. In addition to the amazing food, the owners are very nice folks who take pride in their inn. The daughter, who was just a child when I was there the first time, now does part of the work at the inn. If you need anything, she speaks decent English. With the exception of the location and lack of touristy stuff in Hida (Takayama is a few minutes away by train and has some nice things to do), Sumire-Sou is an excellent place to stay and experience a nice little Japanese inn and be feed some seriously wonderful food. I hope it isn't 10 years before I get back there again.
