Great Traditional Style Stay in Quiet town!”
This hotel was probably the greatest on my 1 month Japan trip across 10 different cities. Felt very traditional from the room to the clothing/lounge wear to leaving tea for use in room. Older couples runs things super helpful labeled a map out of the surrounding town and hot spots to visit. Short walk from station around 15-20 mins. Check it out!

Exceptional”
The breakfast is worth the extra payment. It must also be noted they have a closing time (22:00) since this is a traditional lodging.

Excellent little guesthouse”
Lovely couple running the place, very welcoming. Great location close to Takayama's major attractions and a short walk from the bus/train station. Room was surprisingly spacious (easily double the size of the 10m² mentioned on Agoda). Great private baths. Wake-up coffee service included, which was a nice touch. One downside for travellers who like nightlife is that there is a 10PM curfew. Overall would stay again 👍

Shared toilet not for everyone”
If you are comfortable with the shared toilet facilities, this accommodation would be perfect for you. May get a bit busy in the mornings as most guest will be up similar time in the morning for breakfast. Ask for the 2nd level rooms if possible as there is no bathroom/toilet facilities at the 3rd level. The 2 hot baths at the first level is very nice for relaxing/bathing. Breakfast is also great. We drove a rental and there is a free parking lot available. Just ask the owner on your arrival and he will point out the parking lot.

Cozy minshuku with impeccable service”
From our lodging experiences in Tokyo, Nagano Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture during our two-week vacation, Oyado Yoshinoya certainly tops the list. Firstly, the minshuku (B&B) is housed in a 110-year-old townhouse and Mr Watanabe is the third generation owner. Though the house has gone through extensive renovation, especially its interior, it has maintained some original features like the steep wooden staircases, fusuma (sliding partitions/doors) and tatami rooms. Both Mr and Mrs Watanable are affable, gracious hosts though they barely speak English. Due to my passable Japanese, we were able to enjoy some nice chats. Our room is spacious with comfy futon and comforters and equipped with yukata, towels, hot thermos flask with tea bags and teapots, toothbrushes and razors. The heater is a godsend especially when the temperature plunged to about 10 degrees during our stay. The Watanabes have two grandchildren who hang out at the minshuku during the day so our 29-month-old daughter was thrilled to meet "new friends." The private family bath with actual onsen (hot spring) water was one of the highlights of our stay. High-tech toilets with warm seats are a nice touch and amenities like hair-dryer, contact lens solution, hair and body shampoos are provided for free. Breakfast was a sumptuous affair with Hida beef grilled with hoba miso, grilled fish and the whole works. Mr & Mrs Watanabe also dished out some good tips for local restaurants and shops. A big plus - wi-fi access is free and also avalaible in the rooms. Guests can also use the laptop provided in the lounge/smoking room. Initially, we were only booked for one night since we planned to travel to Hirayu Onsen the next day. But we decided to stay an extra night and Mr Watanabe accommodated us even though they were closed the following day. We have been raving about Oyado Yoshinoya to our Japanese friends since we left Takayama!

Differentiated experience in a local setting”
Excellent hosts (husband and wife team)! Conveniently located on a main road and walking distance to key local attractions (from old town to morning markets; even Takayama Station). Oyado Yoshinoya offers a well maintained and very clean minshuku. This is complemented by the excellent breakfast prepared by the host (Mrs. Watanabe)! The marinated fish for breakfast on our 1st morning paved the way for a second, come day 2. The in-house hot spring bath also offers a much welcome respite by end of a hectic day. The minshuku and its hosts are very welcoming, full of warmth and make one feel like visiting "family" out-of-town. Whilst our room was located on the 3rd floor, with no lift within the building, the room provided (for 3 pax) is spacious and with a view (of the Takayama Betsuin Temple Treasure House across). Overall, the place is quiet, restful, and homey. We highly recommend Oyado Yoshinoya if one is looking for a very local and intimate experience! Clearly memorable!

Amazing Ryokan with Kind, Thoughtful and Engaging Staff”
If you are thinking of visiting Takayama during your time in Japan (which you certainly should!!), this Ryokan is the place to stay. The location is awesome, do not be alarmed that it is a 15 minute walk from the JR station. The station itself is not in downtown Takayama, but Oyado Yoshinoya is in the perfect location, right in the downtown. A 7-11 is a 5 minute walk, too, so if you are a foreigner in need of cash or just looking for a cheap snack you're in luck. The place is immaculately clean. The bathrooms and toilets are shared but we never found them crowded even though we were there in cherry blossom season. There are 2 family baths (as opposed to gender-separated) which is great for couples and families, and the hours are very good compared to other ryokans (4-10 PM and 6-9 AM) so you can shower in the morning! In addition to all this, the staff is superb. They are constantly interacting with you, trying to give you help on where to visit in the city and restaurant recommendations, always saying goodnight, etc. They personally brought us coffee to our room every morning. The husband's english was enough to communicate with. Overall, great experience. Highly recommended!

My first stay in a Ryokan”
During my stay in Oyado Yoshiniya, the kind of hospitality shown to me was exceptional. The landlord was a very kind and polite person. He tried his best to point out all the important locations and attractions in a map. When I was there, the landlady was hospitalized, so there was no one to prepare for the breakfast. The landlord was very apologetic and request to refund the the full amount of the breakfast (1000¥ plus a small additional discount). I have definitely enjoyed my stay in Oyado Yoshinoya! The location was very convenience! It is somewhat in the middle of Takayama! However, it is quite a distance from the JR Takayama railway station. Overall, I would definitely recommend Oyado Yoshinoya to anyone who wish to try ryokan stay!

Lovely guest house in Takayama. ”
The hosts were a lovely couple who made every effort to make us feel at home and comfortable. They spoke limited English but this didn't pose any problem. The room was comfortable and traditional, coffee and tea were supplied each morning which was a special touch. The private onsen was just delightful and we made use of it every day! The accommodation was located in the old area of Takayama and well situated for exploring the town. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend Oyado Yoshinoya to anyone thinking of visiting Takayama who would like a traditional, homely experience.

Amazing stay in Takayama”
Our stay in Oyado Yoshinoya was just great. The room was very big for Japanese standards and the ryokan in general was very clean, simple but cozy. The family who manages the ryokan was very friendly and helpful with us. They don't speak so much English but they do anything they can to communicate and make your stay comfortable. Definitely I recommend Oyado Yoshinoya as the best traditional and value for money accomodation in Takayama.

Best Ryokan in Japan”
Loved our 2 night stay in Takayama at Oyado Yoshinoya! The staff were a 'mum and pa' couple who took really good care of us. What they lacked in English skills they made up for in enthusiasm and kindness. Loved the area, heaps to see and do. The bathrooms are shared, but unlike other Ryokans the onsen/ bathroom is lockable and very private. There are only 6-7 rooms so the stay was very personal and there was never a que for the toilet or bathroom. Highly recommend this ryokan. Loved it!

friendly couple, clean room, nice hotspring bath”
We had a very good time at Takayama. Staying at Oyado Yoshinoya made our visit even better. As other reviewers have said, the place is very clean, nicely decorated, the owner is very friendly, ... I regret not taking their dinner. But then, I also would like to try out other restaurants.

Great cultural experience”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oyado Yoshinoya and recommend it to visitors to Takayama seeking an authentic home stay experience. The owners have some English, certainly enough for basic communication. We particularly enjoyed the private onsen - a relaxing soak at the end of each busy day was wonderful.

best service, clean room and quality foods”
The hotel is in the tourist attraction area and is only 10 minutes walk from the station, passing many tourist attractions. The ryokan is nicely decorated in Japanese style. The room is clean with all the facilities we are looking for, and some beyond our expectation. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Toilets and bathrooms are nice and clean. Though the bathrooms are not big and more suitable for one-person use. When we stayed, it is low season so there are only our group and another room next door so we enjoyed private bath. The owner of ryokan prepared breakfast for us. Breakfast were nicely prepared and delicious. Hida beef cooking on a leave, which is rather expensive and is famause food for this area, were served with full course breakfast. Comparing with the price we paid for breakfast, I think it is far exceed satisfaction. We are very happy choosing to stay at Oyado Yoshinoya.

Beautiful traditional home ”
We had a lovely and sadly brief stay at Oyado Yoshinoya. We were made to feel at home immediately by Mr and Mrs Watanabe. The property is beautiful and traditional, on the main high street in Takayama. The onsen was a great bonus and fresh coffee in the morning was very well received! We hope to find a way back to stay again some day.

Wonderful stay in a quiet Japanese inn”
Yoshinoya was the perfect place for our family. Our kids had been reluctant to stay at a Japanese inn, but loved Yoshinoya. The futons were extremely comfortable and the Takayama onsens were spacious and comfortable. Our kids appreciated that they could bathe privately. The owners are eager to help and gave us many ideas about what we could see and do and places to eat. We felt like members of their family as they saw us off each time we left and asked us what we thought about each days' activities. I speak Japanese and my son is learning Japanese, so we had no problems communicating with the owners, but it seemed that they could communicate pretty well with most of the English-speaking guests. I would not hesitate to stay at Yoshinoya again, or to recommend it to others looking for a low key Japanese inn.

Fantastic Japanse guesthouse with bath”
I stayed for two nights in Oyado Yoshinoya with my husband and this family run, Japanese style guest house vastly exceeded my expectations, particularly since it was one of the less expensive options out there. The room was small, but really cute with tatami floors, sliding doors and small table with green tea and sweets provided. The futons were comfortable to sleep in, even though we had never slept on futons before coming to Japan. The shared bathroom worried me before we arrived, but wasn't an issue, in fact the place was very quiet, despite seeing several other couples and families for breakfast. The breakfast was absolutely huge and delicious - boiled rice, beef strips simmered on a fire in front of you, various pickled vegetables, soup, fish and more! Really glad we added this in when booking. However the absolutely best feature were the two baths (one for 2-3 people and one bigger for 3-4 people) that are fed from the nearby hot springs and were absolutely divine. After two weeks of intensive sight seeing we arrived aching and left quite refreshed. 15 minute walk to the station, most of which sheltered from the rain. Kindly kept our luggage during our last day of sightseeing. Highly recommended.

A delightful experience”
We loved our stay at Oyado Yoshinoya. The elderly couple who ran it were delightful and went to great lengths to help us in any way possible. Our room was immaculately clean and spacious. Although we did not have our own bathroom, the shared bathrooms were also immaculately clean and we never had to wait. We feel we had a very authentic Japanese experience staying here. There are some steep staircases so I would not recommend it if you are physically incapacitated. The weather was very hot when we were there and the air-conditioner worked beautifully but there was no fridge in our room - we would have loved one to store cold drinks.

A great place to stay”
We enjoyed the Oyado Yoshinoya very much. The staff arranged a close-by parking space for us; the room was a good size and everything was spotless and fresh; the Japanese style bedding was comfortable. After a long day in the car, we loved the private onsen, which was also spotlessly clean. Breakfast was the best Japanese breakfast we have ever had. We would have enjoyed a closer bathroom, but really that didn't matter as the shared bathroom was very clean and always available while we were there. A fine place to stay for the price.
