Great value in a beautiful area”
I stayed 2 nights in the western style double room. Front end staff spoke English and were helpful. Most restaurant staff only spoke Japanese but were very helpful. Breakfast and dinner were included at the hotel restaurant and were very good kaiseki-type meals. I would say the public bath was standard for ryokan. The location is very good and convenient to the river next to Arashiyama park, the bamboo path, and Tenryuji-ji. The value for what was received was very good and would recommend to travelers looking to balance budget with experience.

For Those Who Wants A Simple Experience ”
The price is good for a half-board. Quality of breakfast & dinner are aligned with the price, very simple. Location is good, by the river bank. Service wise, it was very extreme; Check-in service was friendly & helpful. Staff serving dinner was hostile. I was staying in a single room & there is only a small pillow. I asked front desk for a additional one & he sternly said no.

It is too bad to have surcharge if ask for late check out after 10am. Normal 12nn check out will be perfect but location if good.

Amazing”
Once I discovered where the hotel was actually located, I couldn't believe my good fortune. "Ranzan" is actually another name for Arashiyama - the mountain at whose foot the hotel sits. There is an inner courtyard modeled on the moss garden of Hogonin Temple, which is just across the way. The rooms facing that courtyard are Japanese style - raised platforms, tatami, futon. Those on the outside of the corridor are Western-style - two beds, sofa, large desk, state of the art plasma television, free satellite programming. The hotel claims to be at the center of Kyoto, but that's a bit misleading. It's at least 1/2 hour from Kyoto Station and 20 minutes from Shijo Omiya. While it's a busy tourist area by day, at night the locale of the hotel shuts down almost entirely. It's great if you want to relax and spend lazy hours by the river or walking to nearby temple gardens. It's a little out of the way for business or nightlife travel. It was one of the more amazing places I've stayed in Japan.

ENJOYABLE STAY”
We've stayed in Kyoto several times before, but this is the first time we've stayed at the Ranzan Hotel. The hotel's location northwest of the city center makes it a quiet place to stay. Although there isn't much in the immediate vicinity of the hotel that stays open past 20:00, it's a ten minute walk to the streetcar station and a 25 minute ride into the center of Kyoto. One point to remember; the streetcar station is located on the bottom floor of a building with other businesses and is easy to miss. We missed it the first time. We felt it was a great place to stay for the price. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. The onsen in the hotel really put the finishing touches on what we already considered to be a terrific hotel. They even provide a written guide on how to properly wear the yukata the hotel provides for use to and from the onsen. The only negative thing we noticed is the beds are a little too hard. However, we will definitely stay here again when we go to Kyoto!

Good location”
Ranzen is located right at the heart of Arashiyama, a very beautiful town on the outskite of Kyoto, next to the Hozu river and close to all the major shirnes and main attractions. It has a very nice garden with big rooms by Japanese standard. We spent one night there and had a fantastic time. I would highly recommand a night's stay in Arashiyama as you can really explore this beautiful town after the tourist crowd is gone and you can also take in the tranquile morning senary of the place. Ranzen can lend you a bicycle for free and I found that this is the best way to explore Arashiyama as, although most shrines are asscessible by foot, it is so much more fun and faster to get there on the bike!

Country retreat”
Ranzan Hotel is in a quaint suburb at the outskirts of Kyoto, nestled at the base of mountains and a flowing river. This is a great place to stay if you really want to get away from it all. It's about a 45 minute subway ride into the city center but the subway system is very convenient. We found the hotel staff to be gracious and helpful. The rooms are worn and in need of renovation. The subway station is only a few blocks away but at night, the neighborhood gets very dark and quiet. Can be unsettling if you are traveling alone.

Peaceful retreat near Arashiyama temples”
This hotel is in a lovely spot near the river and minutes from Tenryu-ji temple. Rooms are generously proportioned (we stayed in a Western style room) compared to many other Japanese hotels. The baths are located in the basement and open until midnight. We didn't eat at the hotel and after dark, food options in the area are pretty limited. The hotel does have several vending machines including pot-noodle options. Our strategy was to eat in Kyoto and then take the 20 minute train ride back to the hotel afterwards. All, in all, a very comfortable, roomy, quiet stay and reasonable value for money.

relaxation after the Kyoto temples”
The hotel is located on the northwest side of Kyoto and the 20 minute journey on the train is well worth it to escape from the busy noisy town after a days sightseeing. One is greeted in Arishiyama with fresh air, a lovely river and intersting walks, its very own temple and much more. The accomodation is very comfortable and the staff are superbly helpful even if one can't soeak a word of Japanese! We very much liked the relaxed bungalow style of the hotel with view of the lovely garden. We would highly recommend this hotel to travellers who like to have a bit of peace and relaxation during their travels.

Good and bad time here”
This is a really nice hotel. I love the food, the people, the area, etc. The garden is just lovely. It's a gem. The travel distance to central Kyoto is only 15 minutes, which is quite convenient, if you are in no big rush. BUT my only bad experience is the bed bugs and rashes I had from the bed I slept in. We stayed in a twin room. My partner in the other bed didn't have the bugs. So, it's just my bed.
