Excellent Ryokan at reasonable prices!”
Loved our stay at Ryokan Genhouin. Our room (with private bathroom/shower) was very comfortable, clean, and had a beautiful garden view. The staff was very friendly and accommodated our vegetarian diet with a delicious non-meat, non-seafood breakfast each morning. We also enjoyed the steam bath/sauna on premises. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto and don't want to spend $$$$ on other similar high-end ryokans.

Great Ryokan Experience”
It was our first time staying at a Ryokan, and it happened to be the best one so far! Before we arrived at Ryokan Genhouin I was already anticipating the the famous Ryokan Hospitality, and we were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly friendly and even guided us around the place showing us the facilities that are available. The facilities and rooms were clean and well maintained, the garden is really beautiful. All in all it was an amazing experience and place to stay the night!

Bliss”
One of my favorite ryokans i've stayed in. We had the executive garden suite (according to agoda) and it was so beautiful. The staff were wonderful and i hope to see them again! We got to hang out with their art collector Papillion and resident artist Rakusho and they were very generous and fun. No onsens on site, but there are two reservable private wooden baths shared among only 4 or 5 guestrooms, and the gardens are gorgeous. Would love to stay again.

The Palace of Ryokans”
This is a gorgeously restored Ryokan with huge rooms and a beautiful aesthetic. I guarantee you will not have a better and more sumptuous breakfast anywhere in the world! Our hostess, Yukiko, was sincerely charming and most kind and helpful. We shall return!!

Beautiful ryokan and excellent service!”
The ryokan is very clean and beautiful, and the service we received was excellent. While the ryokan is fairly central, we noticed that taxis tended to have a very difficult time finding the location.

Serene and peaceful”
This ryokan is very beautiful, peaceful, and clean. The host was a little strange and tried to send me out in the rain without my shoes at breakfast time. But otherwise, the place was delightful. My husband and I loved the location and the environment. The futons were so soft and well prepared. The view onto the gardens was fantastic. But the breakfast was extraordinary. We were very impressed with the chef.

Best 4 days in Japan”
This little gem in the centre of Kyoto puts you in touch with the true Japanese culture through great service, amaaaazing product, and by far the most professional and humble hosts you will ever come across in any hotel! Overall wonderful experience. Yukiko and the whole team there are absolutely fantastic and made our stay truly memorable.

Quaint place tucked in Southern Higayshiyama”
Wish we could have stayed more. The ryokan is accessible by public and private transportation, and you can even walk to several shrines! The staff is amazing as well :) very accommodating and helpful.

Perfect honeymoon spot for a deep dive into Japanese culture”
Everything was perfect from the welcoming to the breakfast (a unique experience that you MUST do at least once) to the moment we left. Our hostess was so gracious and accommodating; we always felt at home. All the details make this place worth every cent. We could not be more pleased by our experience and our introduction to Kyoto. Thank you to the entire staff. It was such a pleasure!! Maybe we will be back one day.

Gorgeous but why so expensive?”
I loved this beautiful ryokan- the staff were lovely, the breakfast awesome, everything was perfect, except the price which was ridiculously expensive (high season).

Experience traditional Japanese living”
This is a 100 yo house belonging to an aristocratic Japanese family. Beautiful zen garden was a visual delight. Family bath in a cedar tub was very relaxing. Futons for sleeping were clean and comfortable. No food served. Location is a bit off the popular spots in Kyoto. Would recommend without any hesitation!

Amazing Ryokan”
Staying at this place was truly a magic experience. It costs as much as a top luxury hotel, but in our opinion its totally worth it. It's a completely different type of experience, a different type of luxury, and one you are unlikely to get anywhere else. It truly felt like staying in Zen. If you have the money and the inclination to try different things I would give it a go. You won't regret it.

Would be fine if not that expensive ”
Very good location, quiet, in a nice garden. Friendly staff. That's for the positive side. Unfortunately not worth the price. It is as expensive as a 5 stars hotel, but without the service and commodities that go along. Expect the service of à bed and breakfast.

Excellent everything. Didn't want to leave. Magical garden, soaking tub & delicious breakfast. This may have ruined me for all other hotels...

It's a great place to experience the traditional Japanese lifestyle experience”
A bit pricey, but the staff were super friendly and accommodating. The place was very clean and welcoming. I felt like a samurai living during the Edo period. But don't expect 5 star hotel amenities as its a bit Spartan. It's what adds to the whole experience though.

Traditional experience”
The first thing that stood out to me was the simplicity of the architecture. It’s very calming and peaceful inside and outside of the house. They’ve got a huge bathtub that is all wooden, a very nice set up. The staff is extremely pleasant and kind.

Nice & Clean”
Room is ok, staffs are excellent but facilities could be better with this price. (freezing in bathroom & restroom). Would be the best if we can have breakfast while enjoying their nice garden view.
