I didn't even want to leave the ryokan.”

Quiet, Comfortable and just all around nice.

I have mostly only good things to say about this ryokan. It was right after Christmas when we got to nagano and by the time we got there by train it was early evening but already dark. We had some hassle trying to find the place and it was slippery so that made looking for the ryokan slightly harder. This ryokan is roughly a 8 minute walk to the train station which makes it easy to access public transport. The signboard has big japanese characters and below it a really small "hakura ryokan" so be prepared to squint. This is all however worth it as the room was incredibly comfortable with a bed area and then a tamami floored tea/tv area. Yukatas are provided for you to go around the ryokan and of course, this ryokan has a indoor hot spring (onsen) you can use during nightime. The hot spring bath closes during the day for cleaning. Right outside the hot spring bath they will provide things like shower caps and hair dryers you can bring in to use. Because of this, we did not use the shower in our room even once during our stay. I found the whole ryokan really relaxing with a homey feel, the general area even has a wii and massage chair. The lady that runs the ryokan was extremely accommodating and friendly. She talked to us whenever she saw us and even asked to arrange transport for us to see the snow monkeys or to the train station and such. Wifi is only available in the lobby/reception area and not in the rooms sadly. A very small minifridge is provided along with a jug and TV in the room. If you are going during winter season and didn't bring any snow boots, they can lend you some for free but those are limited so first come, first serve. There are many local restaurants a lawson within walking distance. The town is lovely and we really enjoyed staying in Yudanaka.

This place Made our yudanaka trip special”

1) service and guest accommodation 2) location 3) wonderful recommendations

*Location: just perfect! Facilities: nothing to complain about Services/ management: personal accommodation is unparalleled Recommendation: everyone going to yudanaka should book at ryokan hakura. *Shino, daughter of the owner now managing the place, made our stay so comfortable, memorable and enjoyable. * 5 mins walk from yudanaka train station. The train attendant can point you the direction. There's a convenience store and cofi shop near by. Ask for resto recommendation. We loved chankyo tamayo (what sumo wrestlers eat) and the near by resto friend of hotel owner serving fresh veggies and yummy Gyoza! You can borrow snow boots as you will need them. The owner was kind enough to drive us to the snow monkey and pick us up later. Ask for places you would like to go as they can speak good English. There's also an onsen and you can walk around town wearing Japanese clothes they lend you. Highly recommended stay at yudanaka! You can't go wrong with this ryokan. Made our stay extra special. Even gave us maki cooked from the burn offerings for good luck! Loved it there! Must try!

Large room, private onsen, wonderful kiseiki dinner + breakfast”

We missed a transfer train and was an hour late arriving at the appointed time. Took a while to locate the ryokan from yudanaka station as we lugged our luggage there. Upon arrival, was shocked to learn the lady boss was actually there waiting to pick us up from train station at my supposed arrival time. Highly recommend that you book the room together with kiseki dinner and breakfast. It was really very delicious. We booked the onsen timing and had a wonderful luxurious time. Lady boss also offered is a free ride up to snow monkey park. It was snowing that day even though it was late march. Couldnt have been more perfect. When i read the reviews here, i was skeptical that all transport to monkey park n to train station were all complimentary provided , but its true. Lady boss took the time to drive us to the station. Truly amazing stay. Oh, we also had other v pricey kiseki dinners in tokyo + osaka. I would say the best is the kiseki dinner + bf at hakura ryokan. Hands down. And very reasonably priced!!

Near station and nice public bath”

Public bath and tatami style in room

This ryokan is very cozy... Only 5 minutes from yudanaka station via shortcut informed by nice lady from tourist information center. Its very easy to find this ryokan because they use HAKURA name in front of their ryokan. Hehe.. I stayed at fujii room for 2 days. Thats a very big room for me. The facility inSide the room: tatami living room style, yukata, small coolinxg box, ocha, water heater, lcd tv with japanese channel, bath room with small bathub. I never take a bath in my bath room because this ryokan have very nice ofuro on 1st floor that i use it. Very cozy. The lady that own the ryokan also very kind and helpful. When i need connector converter for my ipad charger, she called near hotel to borrow it. The minus: this ryokan dont have restaurant. I have difficulties to find restaurant around yudanaka city. So 2 days i bought it from lawson (the only one convenience store near station).

Amazing hospitality”

Staff hospitality, room size, location

The host at this ryokan is amazing – she is always bright and cheerful, she speaks English very well, and she went out of her way to help us out on more than one occasion. This included driving us to restaurants, to the snow monkey park, and to the train station with our bags on the last day. When I spilt some ramen on my jacket, she arranged dry cleaning for me and delivered the jacket to the dry cleaners herself. She also found the public transport info we needed for our next destination, which involved taking two trains and then a bus – information that would have been tough for us to find out on our own due to the language barrier. Other positives are that the room was comfortable, warm and large, which made storing all of our snow gear easy after hitting the slopes. And the hotel is just a 5-minute stroll from the train station, close to plenty of restaurants, a convenience store and a cool bar. The onsen is super hot, though not very big. The only real downside is that the Wi-Fi connection in our room was weak, so we generally had to go to the lobby. Overall though it's the hospitality that makes Ryokan Hakura great. I recommend it highly.

Spacious ryokan hosted by a caring owner Shino ”

The owner Shino-San is really kind enough to drive us to snow monkey park(so we are ahead of big crowd taking a public transport) and drop off to Yudanaka Station after checking out. She gave us local tips on finding good restaurants and making plans for our two days stay at Nagano. The breakfast served at the place is traditional and delicious. We used public bath to ourselves since we stayed in older side of Ryokan (not annix building).

Lovely Ryokan with a friendly owner”

Great Japanese Experience

I stayed at Ryokan Hakura for one night and boy I wish I had stayed longer. The owner was very accommodating and friendly and went out of her way to make sure you were comfortable. The rooms were very spacious and I would opt for the Japanese Style tatami rooms for the full Japanese experience. Even if you are not familiar with Japanese culture, do not worry, the owner is extremely nice and will make sure you feel welcome.

Feels like home.”

Staying at Hakura was one of the best choice made. Shino, the owner made us feel at home. I am very grateful to her for our dinner arrangement, shuttle service to the monkey park without us asking. When she knew I hurt my hand on the day of departure, she kindly offered us a ride to the train station. I felt her sincerity and great hospitality during my stay. The room was spacious and the onsen facilities was great. Had no problems enjoying a relaxing time there. I had dinner at Hakura and it was fantastic. Simply unforgettable and I am sure I will return to Hakura for more next time.

Great Value, Great hospitality”

Large, Clean and comfortable room at a great price

I wasn't too sure what to expect, it was the cheapest accom in yudanaka by a lot. Our room was large (a refreshing change in japan) and comfortable, service was the usual exceptional standard you get in Japan. We stayed on the ski slopes the following nights, but there is a 700yen half and hour bus ride up to the ski fields, so it would be possible to commute up and down every day (and save alot of money.

the rooms so much room and very orthentic, the hot spring bath is amazing, best of all was the staff service.

Was such a nice place to stay, we stayed for four night. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, drove us to the snow monkey park and train station when ever we wanted. Rooms were massive and very home feeling. The hot spring bath was definitely a highlight was so nice to relax in it after snowboarding all day. Then the price we paid and thought we would just have to put up with a cheap hotel but when we got there we were so surprised oh how nice the hotel and room were.

Helpful staff, value for money, close to famous attractions

I entered the Nagano Marathon 2014 but was unable to book a hotel in the city. I stayed in this hotel for two nights. I rented a car and it was about 50 mintues drive from this hotel to the town where the race start. The staff was very helpful and told us where to go to see the cherry blosoom. The location is also close to the wild monkey park, a worth seeing attraction. Overall my experience with this hotel is good.

Fabulous, friendly ryoken with lovely food”

This ryoken was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The mother and son welcomed us and were so friendly and helpful. The lovely son drove all five of us up to see the snow monkeys at 8am (they recommended going early to avoid the crowds) and then picked us up again at 10:30am to take us back to the ryoken. We had a delicious cooked breakfast everyone morning and a traditional banquet in the evening with so many fabulous courses. They even cooked something different for our younger son who is a bit fussy. The onsen bathing room was so lovely and spacious and we made a booking every day to have it to ourselves as a family. Everything was beautifully clean. The son drove all of us to the station for our train at the end of our stay. I cant thank recommend this family owned ryoken enough. The people there were truly lovely and the facilities amazing.

Awesome Experience Best New Years Day Ever”

The Host (Shino), Location & The Onsen

What a great experience. Our host Shino is just beautiful and could not do enough to make us happy and comfortable. Any request was meet with a smile and there was also plenty of advice about where to go, what to see and how to get there - including Shino driving us to the entrance for the Snow Monkeys way ahead of the crowds, just a fabulous experience. Our room was large and comfortable with everything we required, it is surrounded by plenty of choices for food and is easy to get to & from the railway station. The onsen was meticulously clean and the rules for foreigners is simple and easy to comply with. To top things off when we left Shino organised her father to driver us to the ATM for extra cash and then drop us at the rail station. What a great place, we would go back there in a heartbeat.

Friendly host, great Onsen & wheelchair friendly”

The room seize and style, the friendly and welcoming staff and the hot spring Onsen baths

A great experience, the host were welcoming and helpful, I had a western bed and a Japanese sitting area in my room which gave a great mix and good size, loved the breakfast and the host took me to the train station on the day of departure. I would stay there again and next time, extend the stay for longer.

A hotel with onsen facility and a nice host”

The onsen, the host and value for money

This is a hotel with annex building just opposite the road from the main building. Though, onsen facility is within the main building. Besides, the host is very nice and has the patience to try to introduce to us the surrounding areas in English. The monkey park is quite a distance away and not within walking distance. We have our rented car and hence it's not a problem. I think it will take a hour or 2 if walking.
