Quaint gem in the hills... lovely”
I love my stay at Ryokan Murayama. My company and I were ferried from the Takayama Train Station by the hotel staff upon giving a call to them at our arrival. Although he can speak relatively little English, he has made the short journey to the ryokan an enjoyable one. He was very attentive and sweet and he even checked out the weather forcast for us the next day at Shirakawa-go and Takayama. We have chosen the japanese futon styled room and we had an excellent sleep that night after soaking in the onsen. The Ryokan is also about 10 mins walk from Hida no Sato. Only drawback of this ryokan was its location is a little off from the Takayama town (about 20-30 mins walk). It was alright to walk in a group rather than alone as some parts of the road gets pretty dark. It was a pity that my company and I only had 1 night to spare in Takayama. Or else, the distance from the ryokan to the town would not pose much of a problem.

Great stay at Ryokan Murayama!”
We had a great stay the the Ryokan Murayama. We had breakfast and dinner at the Ryokan, and it was absolutely delicious. I'd highly recommend breakfast as a yummy traditional experience at a good price. The location is slightly far from the main part of town, but it's really close to the Teddy Bear EcoLodge (if you're into that) and a short walk to the traditional folk village. Even though it's slightly out of the way, the ryokan owner is awesome and will come down to the train/bus station to pick you up, and he offers a daily shuttle down to the town in the morning. It is possible to walk to town, but getting a ride is just easier. The room is spacious and there is great wifi and tv. The forest/trees outside are beautiful, and I recommend the short walk to the folk village. Having your own private bathroom is nice, but a pricier than a shared bathroom room -- but it's worth it if you prefer privacy. I'd highly recommend Ryokan Murayama as a relaxing place to stay.

Great place to stay when in Takayama”
We stayed in this ryokan for 2 nights and were really happy about it. We did not take the deal with meals included, as we wanted the freedom to decide about when & where to eat. Staff was really friendly & helpful throughout our whole stay. Owner speaks a bit of English, which is practical. The ryokan offers a bus shuttle to the station of Takayama, though only free at specific times (8, 9 & 10 am). We heard that upon arrival at the station, you can go to the tourist information centre and they arrange for the shuttle bus to come & pick you up, but this is only during office hours. We walked from the ryokan to the station the first morning, and it takes approximately 25 mins. The room itself was lovely, very spatious & very Japanese. Free hot water was provided for tea. The bathroom is shared (men & women separated), though there is also a "family bath" for couples or families with children. You cannot make reservations, so it's a matter of arriving at the right time. We found this ryokan very nice & very quiet.

generous, kind staff and beautiful location”
This is a traditional Japanese inn located in the hills a bit outside Takayama. I had a really wonderful stay: the people running the place are incredibly kind and helpful (and speak English very well). On the morning I checked out, they were preparing for a very large group to arrive, so everything was quite busy -- but they still stopped what they were doing to answer my questions about finding my way back to the station. The food was great (breakfast offers both a western and Japanese option). The room was quite comfortable, with a very fancy heater/AC unit right over the futon area. The one and only drawback was the need to use shared bathrooms (in my case, not on the same floor as my room) -- but that's often unavoidable with ryokan. Certainly it didn't detract too much from my stay, and I would highly recommend this place to visitors wanting a more traditional Japanese experience with caring service.

Traditional Inspiration”
Excellent service at this lovely traditional style Ryokan. Arrived in Takeyama at lunch time and then arrranged at Tourist Info Centre for free pick up at 5pm to go to accommodation. As it is located a bit out of town this was handy for us to have a look around lovely Takeyama with its traditional old style buildings. Lockers at bus station next to JR station were also handy so we didn’t have to cart our luggage around. It was a very enjoyable experience for our only Ryokan stay while in Japan. Huge room (compared to Western Style Hotels), with own ensuite bathroom, tea making supplies, urn and fridge provided, comfortable futons, relaxing hot bath and gorgeous yukata to don. The décor was inspiring and traditional breakfast was delicious. Only found one staff member who could speak any English but this did not pose any problems, and he was able to direct us how to get back to Takayama on local bus. Wish we had booked more Ryokans to stay in while we were in Japan. Certainly will next time and, if back in Takeyama, won’t hesitate to stay at this one again.

Cozy takayama experience”
Nice little ryokan near the Folk Village, a bit outside of Takayama town proper (20mins walking), but it's a really nice, peaceful walk up to the inn. And, unlike the folks staying in the city, you can get amazing views of the city with the Japanese Alps as a backdrop on a clear day! That alone is worth it. The owner speaks English and is very welcoming, and the Hida beef dinner was worth the modest price. Nice little retreat for a few day stay.

Quiet, Serene & Relax”
The ryokan is located quiet far from the Takayama city but the owner is quite a nice guy to transfer us to Takayama Station even though is not there fixed schedule. Very helpful and kind. The room is quite big and really a place to relax and enjoy the serenity of the location, if you looking for a place that is quiet and near to nature. Is near to the Hida Folk Village and teddy bear cafe / museum. If you plan to walk to the Ryokan, is about 20 min away from Takayama Station. With heavy luggage, is not recommended. Another option is to keep your luggage at the station where some cafe or bus station providing some lockers services to keep your luggage for max of 3 days. With that, you can walk with you few days clothing. Overall stay was nice.

Great traditional experience”
We travelled to Takayama because my partner wanted to get away from the more traditional tourist spots, and we stayed at this Ryokan for the traditional experience. The hotel was nice, the owner extreamly helpful. The room was huge and cosy, and we had the traditional dinner on the night of our stay. It was definitely a great experience, however there was nothing outstanding about Takayama itself and being that we had to travel a fair way off our path to get there, I wouldn't ever bother to go back.

Appreciated the traditional Japanese experience”
We were very happy to stay at Ryoken Murayama. We booked it to experience a traditional Japanese inn and were happy we did so. The hotel offers a very easy transfer from the station, rooms are reasonably basic but authentic and comfortable, bathing facilities are communal but I had them to myself while staying and they were very clean - appreciated the large hot bath in particular. We took breakfast which was western style and very good, taken in the traditional Japanese dining room which again was a worthwhile experience. The owner is super friendly, speaks good English, offers tourist attraction guidance and is obviously used to explaining how the inn worked to foreigners. Overall a very happy stay.

Enjoyable stay”
The room and onsen were well-kept and clean. There were plenty of information on shuttle bus timing available as well, which helped us greatly. The hotel is located near Hida no Sato and Teddy Bear Museum. However, it is quite far away from convenience store. In comparison to hotels near Takayama station, the hotel is situated in a much quieter location with lesser attractions. It also means that the stay there is quite peaceful for us, as we had a good rest in the hotel and the onsen. Recommended.

Great value for money”
We had an altogether pleasant experience in Hida-Takayama. Upon arrival in Takayama, we stored our bags in a locker at the station and headed to the Tourist Information Counter. They placed a call to the ryokan on our behalf and arranged a pick up for us later that afternoon which allowed us time to wander around and explore without losing too much of our day going back and forth between our accomodations. The pick up was bang on time; the room spacious and clean; the futons very comfy. An all around lovely and "traditional" weekend in the Japanese countryside.

Will stay again”
Location: Fairly good. Amenities: Good and clean public bath area. we had a family room meant for 5 people with attached toilet. Room was large, very spacious and clean. Love the yukata, bath towels and split toe socks. Staff: friendly and helpful, spoke just enough English to be able to communicate comfortably. Parking: Free private parking. Breakfast: Good! Overall, loved our stay here .. will stay again should we come back to Takayama.

Spacious rooms. Great food and service.”
We get to set our dinner and breakfast time. Food wasn't precooked so the Hida beef dinner was still tender and piping hot. Tempura was fried only when we started our meals. The owner picked us from the train station and sent us to Takayama old town. We left our luggages with them for a 1 day excursion. Upon our return, the owner sent our luggages to the train station. Impressive service!

Very good stay”
Traditional hotel with comfortable rooms and very helpfull staff. It is located a little far from the center of Takayama, but with good connection (public or hotel bus), or even if yoy don't mind to walk, twenty minutes far. If we would go back to Takayama we would book again here.

good service hotel”
It is a small hotel. The service from the hotel is very good. We were picked up from the hotel bus at the JR Takayama station. The hotel served a very good taste food. The Onsen or ofuro of the hotel is also nice. The hotel staffs have very good service mind. Travel from the Hotel to the city can be by Hotel bus, taxi, or local bus.

Fantastic Place to Stay in Takayama”
this hotel is run by a wonderful family. they are extremely helpful and sweet, speak excellent english, and are willing to go above and beyond to help you with anything you need. the rooms were clean, the washrooms spotless, and the onsen were excellent. the location was far from town center - approximately a 30 minute walk, but close to hida no santo (folk village). i would still highly recommend it; the walk is pleasant, and bike rentals are also available near takayama station for those who aren't the walking type.

Great Ryokan and great location”
we love the setting, the size of the room, everything was great, we even got a ride to town. when you get to takayama call them so they can go and pick you up, or take bus number 1 and get off at hide sato, just in front of the teddy bear museum.

Location a bit far from the center but nice place.”
Murayama ryokan is a bit far from the station - some 30 minutes walk or 1000JPY for a taxi - but the owner offers pickup at the station (just ring them from TIC office) and there's a shuttle bus twice a day from ryokan to station. Free WiFi connection is available at decent speed! There was a shared bath but we have our own (japanese) toilet in room.

Good stay there”
I enjoyed staying there. When you arrive at the JR station, just call the ryokan and there will be free shuttle van to pick you up to the ryokan. There is also free service back to the station. The staffs were very attentive and informative. No private bathroom, but you need to go onsen instead. Although the hotel is far from the city center, the shuttle service minimizes this cons. I recommend this hotel to travelers visiting Takayama.

Nice Ryokan”
nice place to get a japnaese ryokan experience for relatively cheap price...shared bath but my room had a private toilet and sink...very comfortable and the staff were nice...meal plans are available for about 3000 yen more (if you want the complete ryokan experience)...it's a bit far from the station though about 30 minutes by walking...but it is close to the main attraction hida no sato village...and there are buses that go there from the station from about 10 am to 5pm...if you can find something not too much more expensive, i'd find a place closer to town..since i don't think most of the ryokans in the lower price range would differ too much from one another...pretty good place though if you don't mind the distance from the station
