A sense of home”
This is the best ryokan that we stayed. It's an excellent Ryokan where it is easily accessible from the Takayama station, morning market, the historical houses and other places of interests. We enjoyed our 2 nights stay in the Tanabe Ryokan as we were given a real ryokan experience in Tanabe - from the time we entered to the time we left. All the staff in the ryokan were friendly, helpful and warm. We loved all the little things that they did to make our stay memorable. We didn't wish to go out once we stepped inside as it was so cosy and homely. We loved the futon and the warm blankets. The room was clean and spacious. The staff were friendly, very professional and service oriented. Loved the onsen too! And loved the little gift that they gave when we checked out. They even kept our big luggage in the ryokan after we checked out as we went for a overnight night stay in Shirakawa-go. Thank you Tanabe Ryokan. You have made our stay memorable. Miss you!

The traditional experience ”
We were greeted by the owner who is so kind and very warmed welcoming. Ryokan Tanabe is basically like i am staying with my Japanese family. It provides the Japanese traditional and cultures since we are in. The staffs are very helpful and able to speak English. The room we booked was the Japanese style with half board, we were served Dinner and Breakfast in room. Here is the highlight, the meals, honestly we were like woww and enjoyed this parts so much. In the room the staff will do the beds and set up for each meals. We also enjoyed their Onsen and Bath facilities, it was great! The location is also great, 10 minutes walking to the JR station and about 10 minutes to Takayama old town. Within the area, it is beautiful city. We thought the room price was a bit expensive, however i think it worth to try. I would not hesitate to recommend this Ryokan to anyone who is looking for in Takayama.

Amazing stay, excellent service”
Went here last night with my hubby, we ordered a room which apparently the best room in the ryokan. My room called Fuki (Room no 13), a spacious japanese room located on the Ground floor, with wooden bath, mini garden and patio for enjoying our green tea. Surprisingly, the room is extremely clean! Also the ryokan is located in the centre of Takayama.. very close to Morning Market, 5 min walk to Suzuya Restaurant (if you are looking for Halal certified Steakhouse) & 15min walk to the iconic Sanmachi Street. In addition, the owner - Akiko Tanabe, is also very friendly she greeted us at check in and check out time, she even gave as chopsticks as souvenirs at check-out!! While our stay, we experiencing sleep in Futon (japanese bed) on the floor! definitely satisfied with the ryokan and will come here again whenever I come to Takayama..

A True Ryokan Experience”
Ryokan Tanabe defines the true ryokan experience with its impeccable service and hospitality. While we only spent one night in Takayama, it was an unforgettable experience as the ryokan's owners (an elderly couple) and their staff made us feel right at home with personalised service and great food. While the food wasn't spectacular, I can feel that it was prepared with utmost love and I certainly enjoyed everything that was served. The ryokan is also located just 5 minutes walk away from the old city centre, so access is easy. If you want to have a true ryokan experience, look no further. Ryokan Tanabe ticks on all boxes and I will certainly return if I visit Takayama again.

Ryokan in Takayama”
Ryokan Tanabe is wonderful. But I wouldn't say that it's the best Ryokan I've stayed in in Japan. First of all Ryokan Tanabe is extremely pricey. I've stayed in other such places at 2/3 of the price. However that maybe because Takayama is popular with Japanese tourists and therefore hotel prices are marked up. The food was excellent. Well-varied and seasonal. The few slices of hida beef were tender and accentuated by the stock. The hoban miso was equally wonderful over hida rice. The owner is extremely sweet. She greets every guest and thoroughly explains (in her limited english) about the facilities of the Ryokan. The onsen (Japanese baths) look misleading from the photos. The onsen is quite small, but when we used it there was no one else around and therefore not a problem. The Ryokan is located about 8 mins from the JR Train station and right next to a wonderful shrine with a 1200 year old Gingko Tree. Definitely make it a point to visit this nearby shrine.

Great location, great staff”
Ryokan Tanabe is small but quaint. The staff is super friendly and tries hard to help. The onsen is small but clean and adequate. We had a fairly good sized room to share between us two girls so it was really fab. Location-wise, it's super convenient and is located between the morning market and the old town. It's an easy walk from the bus stop and train station. I would recommend this to my friends and would love to visit again if I get the chance to experience Takayama in a different season.

It's a very well maintained ryokan”
I have stayed in a few ryokans and this is the cleanest ryokan I have stayed. The past few ryokans I stayed either had some odd smell or some worn out furniture or lights. I am surprised by the cleanliness of Tanabe Ryokan. From the lobby, along the corridor and to the room, I could see that every corner of the area is well taken care. The lady boss is very friendly and able to communicate with quite good English. The staffs are very friendly too. Location is good too. It's about 5 mins walk from train station. I will definitely go back to this ryokan if I ever visit Takayama again.

Being a "Japanese" for one night”
it was superb ! the hospitality and warm friendship left biggest impression the most. the owners of the Ryokan, the Tanabes were amazing hosts. the concept of "being japanese" - experience is next. great room design, with tatami. Futon bed that was very comfortable. great onsen experience, and not to forget - the full set Japanese menu for dinner and breakfast. I had hard time saying goodbye to this place. ever i come to visit Takayama, i would love to stay here again.

Elegant room in a brilliant location”
The ryokan provided a fantastic retreat, with something altogether different from a standard hotel. There is a feeling of being treated as a weary traveler stopping off for the night. We were greeted in person, at the door and taken to our room. The silence gives you a sense that you are the only one staying in the house. While you are out to dinner, the room is transformed into a bedroom, and magically restored to a dining room in the morning. Breakfast is brought to the room and arranged with care on the table. One feels obliged to eat every one of the little dishes. This is not a room you might expect to spend the whole day in. Also, not a room to come back to during the day for a nap ('cos there isn't a place to nap until night time). Expect a comfortable, relaxing and calm place to spend a night, and you'll love Ryokan Tanabe.

Exceptional”
The owner is an absolute sweetheart! The dinner and breakfast were kaiseki style - so LOTS of smaller plates of food served in your room as your chosen time and it was all so fresh and delicious. The surrounding area is beautiful. I took a trip via taxi (a bus is also available) to Hida village which is a preserved old world Japanese carpentry village. A wander around the old preserved village of takayama is a must also which is literally a 2 min walk from this ryokan. The male onsen here in the ryokan is somewhat basic so if that is your thing then it might be worth planning a trip to a separate onsen.

Amazing Japanese Hospitality”
We were not disappointed with our stay at Ryokan Tanabe. The staff greeted us warmly and made us feel very welcome. English is a bit spotty but they seem to anticipate our needs and we all seem to understand each other. We had our breakfast and supper at the ryokan and the food is not only delicious but a feast for the eyes as well. The location is another reason we stayed there....a quick 5 minutes from the JR station, morning markets and historical sights. We didn't mind not having wifi in our room since it gave us a chance to be more present and would definitely be back and next time bring gifts from Canada to show the staff our appreciation.

Exceptional”
This was potentially one of the best stays I've ever had! The Ryokan was authentic yet modern, the hosts amazingly kind and helpful and the onsen was delightful. The food served is like nothing I've ever had before and was an experience I'll never forget. I highly recommend a stay here in Takayama, the town is quaint and beautiful. We will be visiting again!

Perfect Service”
We had a beautiful room but what made our stay so perfect was the caring service provided by the staff, especially Sumiko. The only shortcoming we felt was with the baths. Anyone planning a stay at Ryokan Tanabe with big bags should be aware that the establishments has a lift.

Nice, central ryokan with lovely staff and one (of two) beautiful onsen”
Central, but no view from windows, dinner was typical ryokan but couldn't keep up with the many great food choices in Takayama (at a high price). It does offer variety and the charm of eating in your room if you don't have that elsewhere. Aircon was effective but loud and when we opened the windows we heard some loud machine (onsen pump?) come on at intervals which wasn't appealing. We had a private bathroom though and a lovely stay. Staff was really helpful and sweet with our 2 year old and spoke enough English for us to be understood.

Amazing Ryokan with amazing owner and hospitality”
Everything about this Ryokan is amazing. Mrs Tanabe is the most welcoming host we've ever met. Her sense of humour kept us smiling the whole day. Her staffs are extremely professional and welcoming, truly Japanese. The Onsens are quite small, but they're cozy and feel personal although it can't accommodate too many people at a time.

Hotel Review: Ryokan Tanabe”
Place is very quiet and within walking distance from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center. Very convenient. If you are travelling with luggages, consider taking a taxi to the ryokan and it is approximately Yen 950-1,100. Dinner and breakfast serving was great and a great varieties. Morning market along the canal was just within 2 minutes walking distance from ryokan. Very nice stroll in the early morning.

Late check-in, early breakfast”
One night at the ryokan for me was enough to explore the ryokan experience. Coming from a normal hotel with extended breakfast serving hours was a bit tiredsome as the ryokan way is to serve /cook food at your room quite early (7-8am) if you need extra sleeping hours. They will need to put away your bed before seving the breakfast so, that means no more laying down after the food unless you're okay with the bare mats. The big selection of Ryokan food was yummy. The owner and front staffs were really friendly and they can speak English. She can give you advice on train time tables if needed. The lighting in the room could have been cosier with warm light as I personally don't like white day light as it makes everything so flat, cold and boring. I only stayed there for one night so, there was no chance/time for the ONSEN facility.

Near to the old streets & a beautiful place to stay!”
Was not exceptionally near the train station, but wasn’t difficult to find. It was very near the old streets but beware they close as early as 5pm. But around the area there is also a lot of food choices etc. Take note shops in Takayama area closes pretty early like 8-9pm. The onsen in the place was nice, both male & females one included an indoor & outdoor onsen. The room was also very big & the breakfast that was included was yummy!!!!!
