"I went out to Yudanaka with my sister about 3 days after Typhoon Lin hit. First of all, we got in about an hour later than I had originally guessed (10pm) and I was nervous we wouldn't be able to check in and everything would be closed (a lot of places I'd looked at online before the trip had strict checkin times). This was not the case. The man at the front desk had waited for us and had everything prepared for probably the fastest checkin I've ever experienced. The room was already setup with the traditional mats and I fell asleep instantly! FYI for those who are thinking about a traditional room but are nervous, those futon mats are super comfortable and both my sister and I slept amazingly there. Secondly, because of the typhoon just days earlier, the monkey park was closed down due to mudslides. During check-in, the man at the front desk let us know that they still hadn't opened it back up to the public. The next morning at breakfast (sidenote: it is a pretty good spread), front desk man (sorry, I wish I remembered his name) actively sought my sister and I out to tell us they reopened the park that morning! He then brought us a map and gave us instructions on the best ways to get to and from the park. At the train station, he helped us figure out the taxi to get up to the park (1800 yen total). Honestly, this was well above and beyond. The front desk people were so nice and so helpful. I would recommend the ryokan just based on them! The hotel and rooms were worth the stay on their own. Together, the hotel/rooms and staff, made this my favorite place to stay my entire trip. I didn't use the onsen (because I can't bring myself to go in them or public baths generally) but, I heard good things from others staying there. For those going to the monkey park - we took a taxi up (split between a different couple, we only paid 900 yen) and then walked back (downhill and maybe took us 50 minutes at a strolling and frequent photography taking speed). "Despite the language barrier, the front desk staff always trying their best to help with smiling faces. Helped us booked car rental for 1 day. We had to remind 1 staff( abit blur) that was on duty, that our ride to Snow monkey park was complementary ! We were almost charged for the ride! Rooms were big, clean and comfortable Breakfast - Buffet style, serves both Japanese, as well as Western items( croissants, butter/jam, ham, fruits)- almost the same food items for our 4 nite stay..but we are not fussy eaters., so we are ok with it, breakfast ends on the dot at 9am! Enjoyed the inhouse Onsen too! "

"We enjoyed our stay at Kokuya. The guy (he was handsome and I told him he looked like a movie actor) who showed us to the room and explained the facilities of the ryokan did a great job. He and his assistant also handled our dinner and breakfast, explaining the various dishes. The food was fabulous. My wife and I have stayed at various ryokan, and I enjoyed the food here the most. For the first time, I could really see and appreciate the presentation aspects of each dish as a work of art. As like most ryokan, Kokoya is not modern, so some westerners might have some quibble with some aspect of the room layout (particularly the entrance to the bathroom--if not careful, you could lose your step when you open the door) or the stairs. When we checked out, the okamisama gave us onigiri to eat on our journey to Nagano. They were delicious. Kokuya also picked us up and dropped us off at Yudanaka station. Thank you, Kokuya, for a great stay."

"It was an urgent booking on the day we checked in. All the things about this hotel was beyond our expectation. We were surprised when we saw the room that was so sweet, comfortable and beautiful. The village where the hotel located was also comfortable and charming. The ski trip was awesome."
