      Amazing experience”

We only stayed 1 night at Senshinkan Matsuya but we had an amazing time. Keiko San and Tomomi San are both incredibly friendly and helpful and especially Kieko San has very good English which makes it easy to communicate. The ryokan is a beautiful building, centuries old, like many of the ryokan in Shibu Onsen. Note that the showers are communal (gender segregated) and in the same room as (a really nice) private natural hot spring bath in the basement. We had the japanese style breakfast on the morning of our check out which was also amazing, highly recommend. We went onsen hopping in the evening and the Ryokan provided towels, yukata and clogs to wear around town. Shibu onsen is a great place to stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that you base yourself out of Senshinkan Matsuya.

      Much Love”

I loved my stay here and Shibu Onsen as a whole! This is a very special town to me (was proposed to here!) and Senshinkan Matsuya was very clean, comfortable, and accommodating! We did the breakfast and dinner and it was spectacular. Very delicious and a beautiful arrangement served by some wonderful ladies :) The bathrooms were shared but we didn't have any issue with getting in. Our room had a sink, refrigerator, and TV in it. You are also given a key to all the baths with a map of how to get around. Overall, our time in Shibu Onsen was short but incredibly memorable. I would highly recommend visiting and staying here!

      Highly Recommended for Families”

We stayed for two nights at Senshinkan Matsuya with our two children, ages 8 and 10. The ryokan was comfortable and clean and the meals were wonderful. Having a shuttle to and from the train and to the monkey park made traveling with kids much easier. The onsens at the ryokan were very nice and relaxing, too.

Price for meals much higher, but the food and staff are excellent”

To start out with - the very low price listed on Agoda *does not* include meals. The meals are an extra $50/person/day depending on the meal plan. You have to contact them directly. Even with the extra cost, this is still cheap for a Ryokan. However, if you're staying at a Ryokan, get the meal plan. The traditional kaiseki meals are well worth the cost. The staff speaks some English, but as with most small towns a little Japanese goes a long way. The staff are amazingly kind and friendly. They will pick you up from/drop you off at Yudanaka Station, and will drop you off at Jigokudani, which, in my opinion, should be a selling point on its own. They do not have an onsen in the hotel; however, you get a key to all 9 public onsen, some of which are right across the little streets, so this was not a problem. The bath they have in the hotel is in dire need of some ventilation and is, in all honesty, too hot. (From somebody who hops right in the onsen). Rooms were a little dated; some peeling paint, some cracks through which bugs made it in, but the floors and futons and bathrooms and meal rooms were clean. It didn't detract from the experience. Overall, I would absolutely stay here again, and you should too. The staff is kind, friendly, and helpful; the meals are delicious; the resort town is an experience unto itself.

Fantastic ryokan with top notch hospitality.”

Everything was wonderful, from the rooms to the friendly service to the kaiseki dinner. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth it. They provide a shuttle service to/from Yudanaka station during certain times of the day, as well as will drop you off at Jigokudani snow monkey park and transport your luggage to a cafe near the station. The onsen key to the 9 public bathhouses made for a great and unique onsen-hopping experience. The shuttle service really makes a big difference in the quality of the stay, as Yamanouchi is a small town and the public buses run VERY infrequently. Top notch ryokan, would stay again!!

There is an onsen in the basement which is also the shower area. They are very close to the 9 public onsen and third bus stop from Yudanaka Station. You can take bus from the same bus stop to head to snow monkey park.

Lovely traditional ryokan with welcoming staff”

Japanese breakfast was delicious, staff were very friendly and kind, having a key to visit all the onsens was a great perk.

We had a lovely stay at this traditional ryokan. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and helped us to dress in our yukata on arrival and showed us the best places to go in the little town. We tried out a few of the onsens and were not disappointed! The room was spacious and comfortable, although a little chilly at night (although there is a heater in the room). Breakfast was amazing - our first taste of a traditional Japanese breakfast, and we were very impressed. The only downside was that we had been told that we could leave our bags at reception after check out, and continue to use the onsens until just before midday, when we could come back to the ryokan and shower in the onsen before leaving. However, the story changed somewhat on the morning. We were told to be back earlier than 12pm because some mainetenance staff were coming (fair enough). We changed our plans accordingly, but when we got back to the ryokan to shower we were then told that the facilities were now all closed for cleaning! Not sure why we weren't told this before, it was all a bit confusing. However, the lovely stay at this ryokan and the otherwise welcoming and accommodating staff more than outweighed this slight negative.

A wonderful and charming traditional Ryokan, with their own onsen inside the hotel and access to all onsens in the town for free. The room was cozy and beautiful, the staff spoke enough english to understand each other. It's located in the heart of Shibu Onsen, the area full of hot springs, so it's the best location. Also they drove us to the monkey park and to the train station, which was really nice due to the snow. I 100% recommend this hotel!

The great facilities, large clean well appointed room and friendly accommodating helpful staff ensured our stay here was faultless. I certainly recommend this hotel as the first choice for anyone's stay in this village. A wonderful Ryokan in a Magical town”

I absolutely love this place! The staff was incredibly patient, warm and welcoming. They always greeted us with a smile. The location is ideal; literally a couple of meters away from two public onsens. They also have their own beautiful onsen, which you can access at any time. The room was charming and spatious. The staff even offered us a ride to the onsen monkey park entrance. We had the best Japanese breakfast of our entire trip here, in a lovely tatami room. I wold wholeheartedly recommend this Ryokan! It's the only time I've wished Japan had tips.

Don't know the meaning of "hospitality service"”

A friend and I had heard about the wonderful shibu onsens and snow monkey park nearby, so booked this place for it's location. The location is great, but the owner/manager did not show any hospitality or kindness for someone in the customer service industry. I was shocked at our poor reception, then this lack of hospitality continued, including shooing us out of our room 2 hrs before final check-out. For anyone reading this, I recommend staying at one of the other ryokans in Yudanaka.

      Japanese style”

I speak enough European languages and English to remember much Japanese, but the style of this hotel is very Japanese, albeit mostly used by foreigners. I am 61 and haven't slept much on the floor (2 tiny mats under me), but I am glad we did it and all was fine. The hosts are very lovely people, proud and honest. The value for the money was outstanding, they bent over backwards for us. I recommend this place as a great hostile-type hotel that is clean, convenient and easily accessible. They take you to the monkey park, too, which was a barrel of laughs. All good, very nice.

      Cosy little Ryokan. ”

We stay in January in a traditional tatami room. No bathroom or Toilet inside the room but it’s okie as the toilet is just outside the corridor. Clean toilet. Bathroom is the standard type of Onsen bathroom where hotel guest all bath there. Separate between male and female. There is a Onsen inside as well. Anyway, if you stay here, you will be visiting the 9 public bath with the Key provided.

      Lovely!”

A nice little ryokan tucked in a hot spring village! The owner was very kind and the hotel was able to pick us up from the station and drive us to the monkey park in the morning! They only have specific times for this though, and keep in mind you will need to find your own way back.

      Nice Staffs”

It is a small and quiet town. Staffs are nice. Accomodation is abit dated but clean. 10mins drive to the Monkey Park and 5mins drive to the Yudanaka Station.

      Exceptional”

Overall was okay, They could have made their own onsen a private onsen with booking slot. We paid for dinner but it was not as good as we had in other places, so you could skip this option. The room was clean and big. The staff were lovely and helpful. The whole town was lovely. It was such an experience if you love trying out new things, public onsen was definitely a must to try. Although some people find it really awkward at first, but you will get use to it after your first trial.

      Great family run ryokan”

Very nice family run place in a great spot. The food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast were amazing and served in room. The public bath was very hot, but quite nice. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the room was quite accommodating. The AC was a nice unexpected feature. My room had NO views, which was disappointing, but other rooms seemed to have a view outside to the front. It was an awesome location in a great little town.
