Fantastic food”
First time to stay here. Dinner is superb, even the rice is very good. Convenient to walk out and wait for bus to go up to snow monkey park. If u live here, you can also go to other onsen. But Their own onsen is better than those.

Exceptional hotel, staff and best ever food ”
Convenient situated for visiting Monkey park. Enjoyed onsen hopping with the master key provided to hotel guests. Staff were beyond expectations! Both dinner and breakfast were the best we tried so far in Japan. Ended up staying here another extra night here and cancelling other hotel we initially planned. Highly recommend. You will not regret a single yen spent.

Best food of any ryokan that we’ve been to and a great stay! One thing that would make it even more amazing would be a shuttle service from the train station.

Relaxing place with friendly staff”
We had a very nice stay at this hotel. There didn't seem to have many foreign tourists coming to this Onsen town(Shibu Onsen) as compared to Yudanaka (which has the main train station). It is a 20-30 min walk from Yudanaka to Shibu. However, Shibu Onsen is much smaller and has a more authentic feel. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful from check-in to check-out although they do not speak English. We had dinner and breakfast there. Although they were not the cheapest meals, if you want to experience traditional ones, it is worth the try. The waitresses spoke better English. After going back home, we received a few days after from mail a scarf that I had forgotten in the room and did not realize it was left there!

Beautiful place!”
We loved this traditional ryokan in Shibu Onsen. The room was more than expected, and we loved dressing in the yukata for the bathhouses in town. The staff were extremely helpful, even with the language barrier. The town itself was historic and had great charm. The one thing that would have been valuable would be a free transfer from the train station. We found it a huge waste to spend 1000 yen on a taxi when the other ryokans had free transfers.

Good place to stay and relax”
We found the Onsen in this hotel better looked after than some of the ones in the town - very relaxing and very clean. What a great find amid some very tired looking buildings and other hotels in the area.

Very good”
From when the staff first greeted us to when we left, the level of service was beyond our expectations. It was pouring on the day that we arrived and by the time we got to the doorsteps of the ryokan, we were half wet and so were our suitcases. The staff immediately came out with umbrellas and provided us with towels to dry ourselves up. They were so thoughtful that they even offered to take our wet shoes and socks, which were dried and returned to us the next day. The relaxing music throughout the ryokan was just what we needed to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although I had wished they had kaiseki at the ryokan, the place they recommended that was across the street from it was where I had the freshest sashimi. The Onsen experience in the ryokan was also very relaxing and memorable. The staff was always smiling and friendly, and even as we leave the ryokan, they would step outside at the doorsteps watching us walk off.

Excellent introduction to Ryokan Experience”
Staff was friendly and helpful, although the native Japanese staff had very limited English. The room was spacious and comfortable, the dining rooms were elegant and the baths were beautiful. Good instructions on how to use the baths and how to behave (it was our first time). Meals were incredible--generous and served at a comfortable, leisurely pace. And the food was exquisite, even if some of the items were a little odd by American tastes. The town itself, however, seemed to be suffering from post-Covid depression--most storefronts were empty and the whole place felt a little rundown. Still, the ryokan itself was wonderful, and highly recommended.

A true gem”
When I made the booking I had no idea we would be heading to a boutique hotel. It appears to be the best one in town. The service and entire experience are unmatched. I have a feeling that this an elevated ryokan experience, but what a treat! Make sure to book the breakfast at minimum. Unfortunately we could not do dinner, but I am sure it must have been superb. There is not much to do in town during the day, but the evening was magical with us going from onsen to onsen seemingly having the entire town to ourselves. Yukatas and geta are provided by the hotel. I recommend checking out the Monkey Park first half of the day and enjoying the onsen from then on. You will be glad you did!

Memorable stay in traditional ryokan”
Truly unforgettable experience in Shibu Onsen. I have been to Japan many times but my stay at Sakaeya ranks near the top. The service at this hotel is impeccable, the rooms are spectacular and the food was delicious. Surya took great care of us at breakfast and dinner each day, and made us feel special at every interaction. The traditional keiseiki dinners were delicious and beautifully presented. The onsen in the hotel was wonderful. Would recommend this Ryokan to anyone. If you are not used to Japanese food, keep an open mind and enjoy the adventure of keiseiki dining because you will never forget it.

Amazing Stay”
We had an amazing 2 nights here where we enjoyed the local onsens and also went skiing at Shiga Kogen. The staff was absolutely amazing and made our stay so much better, especially during dinner and breakfast services. The property's private onsens (indoor/outdoor) are stunning.

Perfect for relaxing ”
We enjoyed the stay and had a perfect relax before skiing after long flight. We highly recommend the private onsen and sauna. These are always full. Luckily, we have made early booking. Apart from these, we were greatly impressed by the decorative dinner such that we enjoyed both the food and the scene. Everything is good. Should the hotel can arrange pick-up service at station, it would be seamless perfect hospitality.

BEST RYOKAN STAY”
This Ryokan was amazing. It was a bit expensive, but worth every penny. The kaiseki dinner was some if not the best Japanese food I've had. It was super filling and delicious with lots of local foods. The breakfast was also amazing. The onsen were amazing and I loved how they gave us a Yukata to wear around the town. If you are looking for a quite Onsen town with an authentic experience I highly recommend this place!
