Perfect Place for our Kyoto visit”
I am tempted to not leave a review because this place is so special and I would love to keep it all to myself. However, the world deserves the opportunity to experience the delight and magic that is the Takao Kanko Hotel. We stayed here for 3 nights during our honeymoon and to be honest I can not think of anything that could be improved upon regarding staff, location, accommodations, etc. We loved staying outside of the hubbub of Kyoto and preferred the nearby shrines to the busy touristy ones in Kyoto. Each morning the hotel provided a shuttle into town which was helpful and in the evening we easily navigated our way back to the hotel with a bus that allowed us to use our JR pass. Also, we really enjoyed the food, staff explained the food to us and all of our eating experiences were very enjoyable. Finally, the staff is nothing short of amazing. They were all very sweet and accommodating. It was so nice to feel at home during a two week stay in a foreign country!

Warm hearted people, scenic, and good food”
Hiroko is the owner Takao Kanko and she made us feel right at home. Although the Ryokan is difficult to reach via public transport, there is a pick up from the bus stop. Its nestled in the hilly Takao area and this made it very serene. There is a river just outside and you can hear your We had dinner and breakfast twice at Takao Kanko and it was excellent as well. Great food and the staff were always dropping by to check if everything was good. Hiroko also came into the dining room to chat with us. On our last day, she also arranged to have the driver drop us off at the nearest train station instead so that we would not have to take the bus. We've never stayed at such a warm hotel before (its even better than many of my Airbnb stays) and I would definitely recommend Takao Kanko to other travelers.

Quite getaway”
We came to Kyoto during Hanami season, and everywhere we went there were tourists. It was only at Takao Kanko that we managed to get peace and quiet amid the nature and beautiful surroundings. We visited the temples and small restaurants in the vicinity, absolutely charming. Our toddler enjoyed the walks around too. Staff service was great - can't go wrong with a hotel that has its 5th generation on board. We had half board - dinner and breakfast. Dinner was a Kaiseki menu, just great.

WHAT A LOCATION!”
The pictures do not do this location justice, this hotel is in an incredible river valley and each room looks out at a beautiful river. Takao is about 50 minutes outside of Kyoto and is miles away from the hustle of the standard temples and tourist sites. To get there, simply take the Number 8 city bus to the last stop (costs 500 yen) and you can easily walk down the steps from the bus stop to the river and the hotel is right there. Our reservation included a Kaiseki dinner which was truly delicious and a wonderful experience. The hotel is not extremely modern, but was perfectly clean and had some wonderful traditional tatami mats and sliding doors. For the price we paid, we could not have been happier. The staff was so gracious and helpful, and they drove us down into the city for free the morning of our checkout. We loved it!

A good starting point for takao”
Takao Kanko hotel has heart. Despite being an older hotel, it makes up for it with the service and warmth provided by the staff. Even before arriving, they were already contacting us for bus pick up. Before leaving, they gave us an umbrella for free due to the light rains outside. Surrounding the hotel is quiet kyoto beauty - away from the swarms of tourists. The hotel is a good starting point to explore takao area as its a 5 min walk from the bus stop and right beside the bottom of Jingo-ji steps. A trek down to the other side of Arashiyama via Kiyotaki trail is also possible. You can see off the beaten path temples like otagi nembutsu and torimoto preserved street. I highly recommend this hotel for the experience

Priceless Experience”
We stayed here for 4 nights and are leaving with hearts full of love and gratitude. This is not the Ritz Carlton, nor is it meant to be. What is it then? It is a very traditional Japanese hotel that makes you feel like you are staying with an adopted Japanese family that sincerely wishes for you to experience their culture, hospitality, and love. Though the hotel is located somewhat far from the heart of Kyoto, know that this is a good thing. Situated far from all the crowds, you will find yourself immersed in a beautiful natural habitat full of beautiful trees, hills, and a gentle river. While in your tatami room, open the windows and feel the cool breeze and listen to the sounds of the flowing river while sipping on hot tea and looking out at the beautiful view. Enjoy their traditional and tranquil onsen in between the amazing breakfasts and dinners, which is served in a quaint banquet hall with your own private table. There were some surprises during our stay, all of which were pleasant: - they had a shuttle at 10am to drop off guests at train stations and nearby destinations. For us, they dropped us off right in front of the bamboo forests in Arashiyama! They really accommodate to the distance from Kyoto to ensure you get the best of both worlds. -we asked if there was any place to do laundry. They provided us a laundry basket and told us to place any dirty clothes and the owner’s sister picked it up, washed and folded it, and delivered it to our room the next morning, free of charge. -my partner was coming down with a cold one day and they provided really amazing Japanese medicine, cold towel packs, and even delivered breakfast directly to our room, all while showing a sincere concern for our well being. The breakfast was perfect for recovery, including miso soup, a light fish broth, rice, nori, salad, and other items. This stay was a beautiful contrast to our five star hotel in Tokyo. Very serene environment”
Great serene environment away from the city, but convenient to get there, just hop on to JR bus 3 from Kyoto stn central exit, give the hotel a call when boarding and they will pick up at the bus stop. Bus ride ard 45min, 520yen. Hotel is traditional ryokan, we were given Yukata to wear for dinner and breakfast, there is a public bath available, and private bath in rooms aa well. Dinner and breakfast were sumptuous. Location close to few Temples within walking distance but many steps to climb. Very friendly staff, makes us feel at home! When we check out, there is free shuttle service to Arashiyama JR station, which is just a 15min JR train ride from Kyoto station. Highly recommended.

Love the mountains”
Seems like a family-run hotel. Staff were so helpful and kind and friendly. Old hotel so do not expect anything too fancy. Old but clean and functional. Bring hiking shoes - beautiful trails there. I rented a car and had an easy time finding my way there. Worth staying for a quiet retreat in Japan. The food is great, one of the better kaiseki I had among the few ryokans I stayed in. We came back late from hiking in the morning and they were able to still give us our breakfast in the room. It's a 20min drive to main Kyoto attractions, not too far away.

Beautiful ”
absolutely beautiful stay. It’s far away from central Kyoto but OMG DEFINITELY WORTH IT. I cannot express enough the hospitality of the staff. They are absolutely beautiful people and go over and beyond for you and do their best to make you comfortable. I absolutely love them. The view where the hotel is located is absolutely beautiful, near the river. I wish I had more time to explore the area where the hotel is located. It’s definitely worth it and definitely going to stay here on my next vacation. I highly recommend this hotel :)

Traditional Japanese Homestay Hotel”
We loved our two nights in this traditional homestay style of hotel. We learnt so much from the warm and welcoming staff. We had the traditional dinner on two nights and very much enjoyed the traditional entertainment- dance & singing. The hosts carefully explained everything to us. The hotel was some way from Kyoto but the hosts arranged transport and it was worth seeing the stunning scenery and mountains where the hotel is located. Definitely recommend at least one night.

Exceptional”
We took the bus from Kyoto station here, got a little lost and got off at the wrong bus stop, it is a stop earlier than Google maps suggests, they arrange for someone to pick you up at the bus stop. First we walked up the stairs to a local shrine with great views. Before dinner we dressed into the yakuta (robe) provided and went into the onesen, it was small but for most of the time I was there on my own Dinner was amazing, had it in a private room, a mixture of fish, meat and vegetables, we also got some fruit and cake for dessert. You can also buy some beer/wine etc The next morning we had breakfast in the banqueting hall, the breakfast was also amazing, heated tofu, miso soup, apples and yoghurt, rice, and other veggies. For check out we were driven to a subway station so we could make our onward journey and didn't have to get the bus, on the way the driver stopped at good spot for pictures This is a must visit

Exceptional”
Service was superb! We bump into a restaurant guy when we alighted from JR Bus. He give a ring to the hotel and they send down a car to fetch us. Was lucky as we are carrying luggages and we checked the map seemed like we need to climb stairs.. We book with Japanese dinner and breakfast and experience are great! It was a good Ryokan experience! However, when we turn on the hot water in bath tub and basin, the water was yellowish.. hence we use the Japanese public bath within the Hotel. Overall it was a great experience! :)

Relaxing Stay”
We had a relaxing stay in a beautiful area. We enjoyed walking through the shrines and nature trail near by. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and got the Ryokhan experience we were looking for at a good price. The staff was so friendly and made us feel welcome. It was a great break from the cities on our trip.

Classic ryokan, warm hospitality ”
We chose this Ryokan because of its location next to a river. Beautiful setting with hiking routes nearby. We were greeted by the staff when we arrived. The hotel itself looks old but well maintained. No elevators -You walk up there are 3 levels. The warm & sincere service made our stay extra special. Only stayed one night but would certainly recommend at least 2 nights in an area surrounded by nature.

Welcome retreat away from city”
Owners are very welcoming and kind! Perfect break away from the busy city bustle, you will feel at home and be in very good care. We got a private onsen while we were there as there was no other guests. Both dinner and breakfast were fabulous. Only downside was for some reason our room lock didn’t work (nothing was stolen, we put our valuables in the safe) and the rooms were a bit dated (but it was very clean! So it was fine). Would recommend if you are looking for traditional style, value, good food, great hosts and don’t mind a bit dated rooms and bathrooms.

After 2 weeks in Japan, this was the best place I visited. The most beautiful landscapes. We ate an amazing dinner by the river with beer and sake. Behind the ryokan there are 2 temples. We were the only 2 people there! The staff were amazing, very helpful. I'll be back here in autumn for sure

Serene and peaceful location”
On our arrival, we were hosted by very hospitable staff who promptly took our luggage to our room. I am allergic to shellfish and informed the staff before my arrival and they made sure to serve me a marvellous dinner without any shellfish in sight! It is a great location if you like serene locations with the peaceful flow of the river next door. I highly recommend to go in the hiking trail which is a breathtaking walk along the river bed. I highly recommend to book with breakfast and dinner. Would definitely come again!
