Amazing little Ryokan - Stay here after snow monkeys”
If you've come all the way out to Yudanaka to go up to Jigokudani Yaen Koen and see the snow monkeys, then it is absolutely worth your time and money to stay in this quaint town where things move slower. If you do that, then Tawaraya Ryokan should be at the top of your list. The ryokan is within walking distance from the train station / bus station, but not so close that you can hear the noise. The ryokan is plain looking on the outside, but the inside shows a great traditional design. It is a small place with only a few rooms, so because of that each room can be spacious. The room was a good size for relaxing. The staff provide quality service that you cannot find just anywhere. They are friendly, accommodating, and observant of guest needs. They are also very polite, this is one of those places where the hostess will sit and chat with you on the first night to help you get settled in. The public and private bath are both well-kept. The private bath is outside which makes for a uniquely Japanese experience. Absolutely an inn that I want to return to time and time again.

Most enjoyable ryokan experience ”
The staff really went beyond to help us feel comfortable with whatever we needed, despite the language barrier of us not knowing Japanese. The interior of the ryokan is beautiful and the outdoor onsen especially in the winter is breathtaking. Though it can get cold, the rooms are provided with efficient heating and the location is such a close walk to Yudanaka Station. Absolutely recommend this stay.

Great !”
We've had a great time at this family owned ryokan. The rooms were well equipped, the staff very welcoming, friendly and fluent in english. We enjoyed the ryokan being within walking distance to the train station and good restaurants, as well as the ryokan-dinner we had booked for the last night (absolutely recommended). Another thing to mention is the beautiful and relaxing onsen. They provide both an indoor and outdoor onsen option and guests can even book their own slot to enjoy a private half hour at the outside onsen every evening free of charge. Thank you very much :-)

Excellent stay at small ryokan in Yudanaka”
Very friendly and personalized experience. The staff speak English well. The indoor/outdoor baths were very pleasant. They offered a private reservation time for the outdoor bath. The ryokan has only a few rooms so it’s not very crowded. The food for both dinner and breakfast was excellent. Dinner was a ¥6,000 add-on per person, which was reasonable considering the quality and quantity of the food. The Japanese style room was very clean. They have a private toilet but shower facilities are shared, with the bath. The rooms are heated and air-conditioned. The location is close to Yudanaka train station, but down a very steep hill. It’s in a sleepy residential neighbourhood, but there are a few restaurants up the hill about a 10 minute walk. It’s about 30 minutes by bus + 40 minutes walk to the Snow Monkey Park.

Everything was wonderful. The staff were incredibly helpful, the rooms were nice, and the onsen was perfect. Being able to reserve the large one private for my wife and I was really great. Will visit again.

Exceptional”
Amazing experience. Clean. Private. Your own toilet and sink. Delicious breakfast and optional multi- course dinner. The staff works very hard to make your stay here private and traditional yet relaxed. You are given your own time slot for meals and your own private time in the outdoor hot spring. the ryokan only has a few guests at a time yet I’ve never stayed anywhere and met so many interesting people. The bed is traditional on the floor but “memory foam-ish” and comfortable. It’s close to train station and great restaurants. They drive you to the monkey park in the morning. Staff speaks English.

We only stayed for one night, but couldn't have been happier with our stay. The staff, who spoke good English, couldn't have been more kind, friendly and helpful. We arrived before check in and were able to leave our bags. We chose this Ryokan because of the outdoor Onsen facility and particular because we had read you could use it privately. When we arrived we were able to book a time slot for the private use of the outdoor Onsen. In the evenings they reserve the onsen for private use and each room gets a half an hour slot, which is plenty of time. The water is super hot! We loved this experience! The indoor Onsen is basically the bathroom. There is one for men and one for women. If you have never bathed naked communally, it can be a bit daunting, but you just have to go with the flow and accept that's how it is! Toiletries all provided! The breakfast was delicious and traditional Japanese. Rooms were spacious, warm and clean. We had a toilet and sink. Highly recommended this Ryokan!

Lovely room, with private onsen at selected times ”
Lovely staff. Lovely small hotel owned by a mother and daughter team. Sayaka San the daughter spoke good english and so did her mum. Both made the place so welcoming. Private outdoor onsen was lovely. U can choose times (30 mins each slot). Or just use the tiny indoor onsen which was older and basic but served its purpose of relaxation. While location is next to Yudanaka train station, it is not the most scenic of onsen towns. The adjoining Shibu Onsen is much prettier and seems to have more to offer. We were there in winter, and there were not many eating places available even in daytime. But still, I would recommend this place for its excellent service, beautifully understated room and private outdoor onsen. Great job Sayaka San and mother!

Comfy & Hospitable Stay!”
It was our first day in Japan, although the hotel was a down slope & not easy to find nevertheless we enjoyed the onsen & they also have an outdoor onsen available for booking. Each room will be given a time slot to use it. If you’re lucky a transport is available, they might be able to pick you from the train station, we got a drop off when we left the next day! The dinner & breakfast was SUPERB! so tasty & room is so big. Such a comfy stay to start with
